i've been on a search to fix a check engine light. I fixed a rotten, disconnected hose on the back of the SAS valve. I was hoping that would solve it, but that didn't fix it. I put a new SAS valve in, and did the VW air pump trick. That didn't do it, either; I have a P0445 code. And there is a slight fuel smell in the cab (not strong enough, I think, to be an actual fuel leak).
I could do the diode trick, but I'd prefer to try to fix it legally.
Ideas on what to try next? Thank you! Rick

Is the blower running when you start the car? The SAS really doesn't do much, it heats up the catalytic converter a fuzz faster and that's about it.

P0455 is an evap code, not SAS.
You probably have bad hoses to the evap canister in the fender well (?)
The J hose is often the culprit and the slight fuel smell is a great tipoff.
Well documented in threads and also in the VOlvo repair database here

Most common cause of an Evap Leak Smell on Volvo S70's is a crack in the "J" hose which is connected the charcoal canister. OTHER causes could be leaks on the Evap Lines and the Purge solenoid(on radiator shroud), but the most common is a cracked J hose which gives off a P0442 OBD2 code.
If a crack is found, replace hose by removing clamps and replace it.

On my '97 855, the cause of the P0445 code was a nibbled rubber hose at the rollover valve located next to the fuel filter at the rear passenger's end of the car.
