1997 850 wagon: Rear Defrost ?, Heated Mirrors not heating?

Post by brian_kearney410 »

Greetings-
When using the Rear Window Defrost/Side Mirror function, the rear window defrost works (save for one line - is that one line repairable?), but neither side mirror seems to warm up at all. I realize it's quite cold out recently, but I was hoping for some amount of melt/defrost. Is it possible to replace the heating element in the mirror(s) or do I consider replacing the entire mirror unit?

Thanks,
Brian

Yes. There is a product, which your local car parts shop should have, which can be painted onto the glass to join the two ends of the bad line. Sorry, but I can't remember its name.

As for the mirrors check to see if you have 12v at the glass. If not you can replace the glass.

Bill.

I have the same issue. My Rear window works but neither of my side mirror's work. Is this a common issue where both would go at the same time?

I very rarely hear of the heated mirrors not working...much less both at once. I would look for a common ground, fuse, etc. before thinking that the mirrors themselves are defective.

The heated rear window and the mirror heaters both work off the same fuse #11. They also both work off the same relay, although off different terminals on relay #13 on the central electrical unit. The rear window is terminal 87 and the mirrors 87B.

Therefore, as MIJ suggests, you will probably be looking for a bad connection or ground somewhere.

On my car and my friends 850 our driver side mirror does not work.

His car also has alot of bad connection on his back window due to a amatue tinting job. When they were trimming the tinted plastic material off they sliced through a few of his defrosting connections on his window. They're are products however that you can pick up at your local auto parts store that allow you to paint on some repairs where the lines are sliced at. I think the kit is like $5-10 if I remember right.
