Did you hear any BANG noise when the engine cut out? Like the belt breaking and the insides of the motor getting to know each other?
Do you have access to an inspection camera/scope? if you can, pull the plugs and look at the piston tops with one, to check for marks from valve/piston contact.
You say the belt came out in pieces, or it broke as you removed it? If it was in one piece and timing had jumped enough to shut it down but not to cause valve to piston contact you may be alright.

Best of luck, and let us know

Your chances of no engine damage are very very small. You are looking at removing the head to repair some valves. When this first started, did you try to crank the engine? If yes, then you are looking at a broken and seriously broken motor. Do you do your own work? If not, figure 1500 to 2000 to repair the motor or start shopping for a replacement engine. Don't go making yourself crazy trying a new belt etc etc because that head has to come off. If your engine is OK, go buy a lottery ticket 'cause your the luckiest person that ever lived.

Doesn't matter now. Valves are bent.

If that didn't do it.

This would.

I would look for a used running engine at this point. Put a new timing belt/waterpump/cam/crank seals and call it good. Shouldn't cost over $1000 if you do the work yourself.

Alas, this is not at all just a "no-start" thread, is it.

It's been said a few times now, tryingbe sure did nail it very early on, I agree so mostly just giving my condolences: the car almost certainly needs a head rebuild or another engine.

Sorry, I was hoping it was not going to be that but it was highly likely.

All intake valves are likely bent.

If you need proof before pulling the head you can align marks, put a belt on to do a compression test before pulling the head. I don't as if the motor was spinning and the belt was broken then the valves are usually bent. You can also just remove the cam cover and the cams and then do compression test if you want.

Remember to realign crank to its mark before putting head on.

That belt broke violently, You will need to find what bound up and replace it along with the water pump rollers and tensioners.

No, I did not miss the photo. Threads are designed to help the person in immediate need as well as others. The video will help people troubleshoot a lot quicker than this guy did. Took him a couple of days and several hours to find an issue that could have been found in less than 30 minutes.

Would not be a bad idea to post timing belt change intervals, etc. to help the community.

Thanks everyone I was hoping it wouldn't come to an engine swap but it seems that is the only solution.

No loud noise when my car stopped just slowed down I did change the timing belt and I'm getting the same problem no start, I did notice that the cams rotated No weird noises just the starter motor engaging and turning.

When I pulled out the timing belt it was stuck by the crank shaft one of the pieces shimmied in between the belt and crankshaft it was in two pieces i broke it to make taking it out easier.

I don't think my valves are bent because when I hand cranked the engine by hand 2-5 times just to make sure the timing didn't jump it didn't feel weird or hard to turn and there was no clicking or noises, however I don't know so that might be it.

I will be taking it apart out of curiosity to find out what really happened and to see how hard it would be to take it apart also it will help me sleep better at night.

Thanks everyone Looks like I have a project for this weekend hopefully that will do it if not I will say my good byes and pull everything out before scrapping.

PS: If I do the engine swap my transmission is okay to stay or should I switch it out as well?
