1998 xc70 Correct Outer CV Joint

Post by drgswede1978 »

Hi. Does anybody know the correct outer CV joint for my car. Found some good prices online, but there are two. One with 26 splines and one with 36 splines.
Thanks.

Need to call the dealer with your VIN and get the Volvo part#. There are several front drive axles not just 2. Most suppliers should then be able to cross-reference them. If you have no luck, I have a 98XC axle somewhere in the garage and I will try to find it and see how many spline is has. Can't get to it until tomorrow. This one has a balance collar on it.

Just warning you, that a lot of the re-manufactured units are crap. I had 2 fitted to an 850 and 1 had the CV boot fail in about 6 months, and the other lasted about 4 years. Car only did about 25k miles in that time. I replaced with a very good OE used item and the vibration the car had that I thought was the tranny failing, turned out to be the badly re-manned drive-axle. After fitting the OE unit the car ran beautifully in the first time we owned it! Smooth.

I know some of the guys recommend a company in the US that does quality re-built units but I don't know their name.

Neil.

The company that does super quality rebuilds is raxles.com. Call Marty. It's pricey but IMHO worth it.

I agree about aftermarket axles: some work fine, some are utter crap, and it is hard to now which one you are getting.

Found my old axle! It has 26 splines on the end where the hub axle nut fits. I'd still look to get the correct part number from Volvo and then match. I am still wary assuming anything with Volvos and their parts, even after 40 years.

My experience with REIN is so-so. After 3 years, the Boot starts to show minor cracks.

GKN-Lobro is OEM, it is good stuff and should last you some 80K-100K.
Check to be sure, but the CV Boot is about $15 or so at rmeuropean dot com...

OP needs the CV joint, not the boot. He is in Sweden, Cam didn't you have a link to a European supplier?

Erik, You are correct. My bad!

OK, for the CV Joint...drgswede1978...Go to ebay UK website and search "volvo xc70 cv joint".

The trick is to search using GKN PN 302148!!!
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from= ... v&_sacat=0

It is about £75.60 + £25.00 shipping from the UK to Sweden...

I wonder...since you live in Sweden, the very same country where your Volvo came from, is it easier to get parts?

Thanks for the reply.
It is easier to get parts here but they're nearly twice the price.
That one from ebay looks great, thanks.
