2005 v70 ticking
2005 v70 ticking
My 2005 Volvo v70 is ticking with 135k. Coming from the top end. It's shooting a code, P0014(Exhaust Camshaft Position Timing-Over-Advanced Bank 1). I just bought this car on a good deal. Any help will be great.

Without much knowledge, it may be a faulty CVVT solenoid at that mileage. On the passenger side under the spark/wire cover near the belts.
Could be an easy fix of replacing the solenoid (make sure it's exhaust). Get a new gasket too.
Or you can try to take it off and clean it out. I did this repair on an earlier model (pre 01) and decided to buy used OEM due to harness connection had changed. I figured I could try that 3x before it would add up to the cost of a brand OEM.
I would do plenty of reading though as it could be an all timing issue? here are some links

Sounds like a cam position issue. The ticking can perhaps be unrelated.
Make sure you have oil pressure at idling, in case the ticking goes away when revving the engine.
Make sure you have good oil filter with not too much pressure loss (e.g. Volvo OEM)
Make sure you have good oil thickness (not full synthetic, and perhaps 10W40 if you do not live in snow country)
Lifters (they are hydraulic) can be worn and leaky/stuck creating more lift clearance than normal.
Oil pump can also start to leak - loosing pressure.

It's my understanding that the CVVT solenoid controls oil pressure acting on a spring to change the valve timing. If upper end oil pressure is insufficient, ticking can occur and proper valve timing cannot. Hence the fault code.
