2005 S60R Ticking coming for the passangers side

Post by dmdeclements »

I have 2005 S60R and I am hearing a ticking sound from the passenger side of the motor (can hear more by the tire than on top of the motor). The car as 111k on it, just had water pump, t belt, c-belt 6 months ago and oil flush as I thought it might have been a sticky lifter. It has been 2 weeks since the oil flush and the tick got quieter but is now back to the noise level it was before. The tick will go faster as you hit the gas. I am not sure what it could be. I did a coolant flush about 3 weeks ago and was wondering if I didn't get all the old coolant out would the water pump make the tick? Any help is greatly appreciated as this is my daily driver.

It has to be something spinning, as the noise increases in frequency in relation to engine rpm.

When you replaced the accessory drive belt, did you also replace the tensioner pulley? That's a fairly common replacement at 111k miles.

I would remove the accessory drive belt, then spin each item it powers in turn. A mechanic's stethescope (sp?) is invaluable in this situation.

You can use a short piece of garden hose or tubing to listen to each spinning part of the motor and accessories to isolate the sound. Its quite effective.

The hose color should match your car to be most effective. Ive found doing this at night, with a boot on my head, scares small children but it also means your neighbors leave you alone.

I read somewhere that new belts flex or stretch less so if one does not replace tensioners and idlers with the belt, any slop in these will be accentuated by a new belt and possibly cause the bearings to fail. I didn't replace my idler when I did my aux belt replacement and short time after it developed a subtle yet annoying squeal. Whether that was because of new belt or just its time to go I'm not sure but I'll be replacing such items when I replace belts going forward.
