Nice (in)expensive tool.
Why not use the pump from an old liquid soap dispenser instead and save the $10 for a 6-pack (or two) - it helps concentrate while pumping in that new fluid
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

Doing a drain and fill on my 2001 V70 yesterday. Interrupted by my young boys I came back and stuck the long funnel down into the dipstick hole started pouring in the new fluid, then had this horror moment  I'd not put the plug back onto trans. But here's the good thing. I'd swapped the tray under car for a clean new one to catch last drips while pored old stuff into old oil container. So pouring new fluid into a container to put back in, I find gasket sealer blobs that didn't come out the first time I drained It.
My point is that pouring fluid down through trans without plug has cleaned out what didn't come out with hotter thinner fluid (and no plug reducing flow).
Is this a pointer to drain your transmission with it not too hot to catch and expel heavier particles out. I ended up filtering my new fluid before putting it in one last time !!! PLUG ON !!! :D

After changing fluid I did the second below procedure. But from reverse from park. Helped make reverse engagement more smooth it seems.

But also did both for Drive selection too.

If you do not have access to the factory tester or Volvo VADIS.

In place of resetting and doing full adaption procedure then you might try the following.

1. Drive the car forward in the “D” range at about 5 mph (8kph) and bring to a gentle stop. Repeat this procedure at least 10 times.
2. With the engine at idle and your foot on the brake, shift from “N” to “D”. Wait for about 30 seconds. Release the brake. Repeat this procedure for 10 cycles.

Is the engine supposed to be running when checking the ATF level?

Just read through this entire thread (I'm at the beach on vacation) as I'm getting ready to do this on my son's '07 S60 when I get back to town. There were some misconceptions in the thread by a few people that need to be cleared up although the posts/questions were years ago. First off, we do a drain and fill on cars that the history is not known, ones that we know haven't had the fluid changed and the fluid is most likely dirty and if there is a problem with the transmission. A full flush disturbs to much too quickly unless it's a good known transmission with clean fluid- this procedure is done as preventative only. I hope that settles that. The other issue is the type of fluid. On the AT 4 speeds ('98 and older), you can get away with Mobile Synth ATF...maybe even Toyota ATF....some people were posting using this for the 5 speeds but that's a HUGE NO NO!!! The Volvo 5 speed Auto transmissions MUST use JWS3309 fluid. There are only a few who really have this....the Toyota Type IV is one, Mobil 3309 is another and Volvo's own fluid is the other. I'm sure that there are some others on the market but it MUST specify 3309. Even if the bottle says that it is for Toyota automatic transmission and Volvo auto transmissions, it if doesn't say JWS3309 compliant on the bottle- DON'T USE IT! Yes, Toyota had auto transmission in their cars that used a different ATF before the 3309 spec fluid came into use- this I assume is what some people are confusing things with. Rant over- I just won't want anyone really screwing things up with their transmission thinking that they did their car a service by using the wrong stuff!! Now, back to sleep for me!

I would add, MIJ permitting

- 'sump' drain can be done using the lower 24mm 'pan' bolt (located just at the bottom of the transmission casing) and fill can be done by the upper yellow dipstick tube.
- manual 'flush' with the engine running can be done by the return cooling line - the upper line - disconnected at top of the radiator and a tube inserted at it's place (the fluid will flow out of the radiator) - I believe a 3/8 is the right size but not sure. This manual flush can be combined with a sump drain
- machine 'flush', done by garages, a flush causing the fluid to run with force inside the transmission to be avoided as mij explains

Another very important thing alluded to here in this thread, the BOLT THAT SHOULD NEVER BE REMOVED!!!
Note everyone- if you remove this, thinking this is the fill hole, you've bought yourself a new transmission or you're parking your Volvo. Volvo has gone out of their way to try to warn owners:

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I need to change the ATF in my v70.

Is there any chance you could re-host or re-upload the photos from your write up E170_Driver?

Thanks in advance from over the pond!
