light for controls below cluster 97 850 GLT wagon

Are those controls (sunroof, defrost, etc) in a horizontal line below the cluster supposed to be lit? Seems odd they're not - could easily open roof accidentally while poking for the defrost (have to remember that defrost is first left of the temp knob)...

Yes, all but the rear fog light switch should be lit (at least, on my 98 V70R). It's easy to fix with a quick trip to the dealer and a screwdriver to pop the switch and bulb out. I think you can get the bulbs cheaper than at the dealer, but I don't know the details about that.

Thanks - btw - includes rear fog switch on the 97 GLT s/w. bulbs hard to find online, but dealer had 4 on hand at ~$5.50 each (pricey (although some higher elsewhere) but nice to see controls again) As you said- in and out in 10 minutes...

Hey,

I have the same problem on my 1994 850 Turbo. None of the buttons below the gauge cluster light up! So tell me, all you had to do was pry out the switches (sunroof, rear defroster, ect...) with a screwdriver? There's a bulb right behind each one?

I thought I would have to take apart the dash, and never bothered!

You are right...pop them out, replace the bulb and pop them back in....use a dull knife when you do this so you don't scratch the paneling.

The switches do come out that easily but on a '93 or '94 you must take the entire switch apart to get to the lamp and you also need to solder the new lamp in place.

It is not a job for the timid but it can be done.

I took a look at the switch (after popping it out from the dash). It's looks rather difficult to open up. Are new switches expensive? I'm just thinking it would be best to just change the switches.

My headlight switch doesn't light up either. Is it supposed to? Maybe there's something wrong with the wiring if all the switches below the instrument cluster don't light up?

Please advise.

Does your instrument cluster light up like it should when the headlights are on? If not, try sliding the lighting intensity control (over the rear fog light switch) back and forth several times. The contacts inside the slider might be dodgy.

Yes, the instrument panel lights up with the headlights on. I see what you're getting at. Like you said, it's as if the dimmer control by the fog light doesn't seem connected properly to the rest of the switches below the instrument panel.

Lee, are those bulbs for a 93 available thru a dealership? If so, do you have a part number?
