Gas Gauge reads zero

'93 850. Filled up with gas yesterday and when I started the car, the gauge read zero and low fuel light was on. After a few minutes low fuel light went out. After a few start cycles, the guage started working again.

Is my sending unit going bad? Any suggestions?

It sounds like it, or the fuel level indicator (float). Just keep an eye on it. You know Murphy's law. If it's truly bad, it will happen again and most likely worse- the light will begin staying on all the time.

I have known the float to become stuck and then free itself and work normally ever after. Hope this is what happened with yours. Time will tell.

In one specific instance...

Just before filling the gas tank with gas, I left the ignition key in the "ign" position (instead of the "off" position) just so my passenger could listen to the radio.

The needle on my gas gauge was reading incorrectly the rest of the evening. It didn't correct itself, until I let the car sit overnight, and started the car the following morning.

Hopefully, your scenerio has the same results as mine.

NOTE: Turn the ignition off or to position I when refueling. If the ignition is on, an incorrect reading could occur in the fuel gauge (low fuel level will be indicated).

This is an extract from the owner's manual for the '97 850. I have also seen it in other manufacturer's books.
