Turn your CRANK shaft one full revolution and report back.

Don't turn the crankshaft without the timing belt being on though - bad things will happen.

I need to pull up some manuals. On the turbo version the coverplate is on the intake camshaft and the camshaft position sensor is on the exhaust camshaft. From your pictures, it looks like your set up is just opposite of that. As I think about that it makes sense since the 2000 N/A cars had the CVVT hub on the intake camshaft rather than the exhaust camshaft like the turbos have.

Let me pull up the VIDA procedure for replacing cam seals on a '99 and I will post it. I think we are all confusing ourselves at this point. This car does use coil packs doesn't it? The '98 engine had a standard distributor setup on the intake camshaft and the cam position sensor on the exhaust camshaft.

I think the O.P. mentioned that he re-installed everything incl. the timing belt and went for the test drive.

i turned the crankshaft one revolution and the camshafts turned 180 degrees and are still parallel with the head line. the front camshaft notches are now above the head line and the rear notches are below the line.

i do not know if it has coil packs? how would i tell?

the notches are lined up properly based on what you guys have suggested and the car looks good.

FWIW - the last two times that i started the car up (the latest being last night) the car revs up to 2000-2500 RPM for about 2-3 seconds and then falls to 1000 and then begins to sputter.

assuming the timing is correct, what else could this be?

thanks for the guidance.
Cheers!

1999 has coil packs, mounted directly on the spark plugs.
1993-1998 has cap/rotor system.

The cause of your sputtering may be elsewhere, and not due to timing issues, which you may not have at all.

Check maintenance records:
- Fuel Filter
- Spark Plugs
etc.

Also, get an OBD-II scanner and see if you get any error codes.

Did you somehow damage the CPS during the above procedures?

the CPS looks in good shape. would that really make it run this poorly?

the fuel filter is good.
spark plugs could stand to be changed. but i fail to see how changing my front cam seals would mess up my spark plugs. what else should i check?

i wish i could get it to an auto store to check the codes...i will work on that, but its going to be tough if its not running. not currently in a position to purchase an ODB reader.

Good catch on that "one revolution" of the crank to get the cams right. Super super super!

If the car has spark plug wire it does NOT have coils. Coils bolt over the spark plugs.

I was trying to see the PN on the back of the intake cam, it looked like it had an E on the end of it. Hope I'm seeing things.

The main reason that you want to turn the crank over twice, by hand, prior to starting the motor, is to MAKE SURE the timing is proper enough to clear all of the valves from making contact with pistons. One turn on the crank is a 1/2 turn on the cams (the crank sprocket is 1/2 the size of the cam sprockets). IE, when you start the car with the key, it wont damage the motor with valve to piston contact.
