2003 s60 Passenger Airbag Deployment

Post by maddog2020 »

My daughter hit the wrong pedal while parking her car today and hit a wall hard enough to cause the passenger airbag to deploy. Looking at the car we can also see that she hit it hard enough to push the front corner back just enough to increase the gap between the hood and the wing to about 5mm.

I don't care too much about the cosmetics, just looking for guidance here on what I need to do to replace the airbag and reset the SRS warning. Also I guess I probably need to replace the interior piece that covers the whole dash (I really don't know what that's called).

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Ian

Indeed, the dash needs to be replaced. Was there a passenger in the front seat? Usually, the safety belts have a pyrotechnic retractor (pretensioner) that can also be activated when the airbag deploys, and it's important to have it replaced as well (for the seats that had passengers when the impact happened).

You have obvious unibody damage.
Unless you straighten it out it will ALWAYS be out of alignment

I had the alignment checked today and it's still fine, the damage is minor, so "obvious unibody damage" is a bit excessive.

Good info on the pre-tensioner. There was nobody in the passenger seat. The driver's side seat belt still feels completely normal. Is there any way to check if the seat belt pre-tensioners have triggered?

Thanks,

Ian

The belts will generally feel rough when you pull it out/retract if they work at all if the pre-tensioner is triggered. If you can scan the car, fault codes in the system should show up as well.
