2000 V70 non-turbo winter wheels and tires

Hi everybody,
I just had a quick question. I am considering buying a set of winter wheels and tires for my V70. I found a set of what looks like 2008 or 2009 XC70 rims and snow tires. The tires are 235/55 and the wheels are 17 inches. Would this limit my performance and/or bog my car down at all due to the larger diameter rims and heavier tires? My car currently has 189,000 miles on it, doesn't seem tired at all, but I'd hate to do something that would put added stress on the motor and drive train components. I currently have the stock 15" alloys and 195/60 tires. Any input, advice, or suggestions would be gladly welcomed, thanks!

One key to your question is to compare the sizes of the two tire/wheel combinations.

stock: 195/60/15
considering: 235/55/17

Go to a site like http://tire-size-conversion.com/tire-size-calculator/ to compare, there are tons of sites if you don't like that one. It says the 235/55/17 are 10% - 20% larger in all dimensions, including diameter. That's too much change in diameter, your car's speedometer will be way off (by about 11%) and I am almost certain those tires will rub on the car.

A good rule of thumb is that changes in speedo readings should not be more than a few %, like 3 or 4. Then check on the forum if anyone has experience running that particular oversize (or undersize) tire.

cn90's post will lead you to a page where you can compare other details of the wheel dimensions, but they are sort of irrelevant for the particular tire you questioned because those 235/55/17 are just too big. Right, I had considered the speedometer issue as well. I know in high school when lifting your pick-up truck was popular, a lot of friends had issues with their speedos being way off due to larger tires. I do often use tirerack for reference too. I'll keep looking around to see if I can find a more conservative set of rims and tires. Living close to Lake Tahoe, there is no shortage of Volvo wheel/tire sets going up for sale. The elephant here is the hub size. The 2008 - XC70 is smaller than the 850. I think if I remember the hub size is 63.Xmm for this car, and 850/P80 V and S70s, P2 XC70 are 65.1mm. I bought a set of 2008 rims from an XC70 that were listed as from a 2007 and they wouldn't fir my 06 XC70.

Width wise you also have to watch out for. Standard is 43mm offset on the rims. A bigger offset number may cause the tire to foul on the brake line or strut assembly. I am running 2005 S60 17" rims on my 2000 V70R with 225/45/17 tires. These clear but not by much. Need to check both front and rear for clearance.

I stuck S60 17" with 235/45 or whatever the OE aspect ratio is on an 850, they were rubbing in the rear on the inside & in front on the outside on bumps, the XC tires in 235/55 are way to tall & wide to fit, centre bore was no issue, had to remove the guide pins though as the wheels had no holes for them but rather "blocking studs" or whatever you wana call it, guess Volvo is trying to tell us not to run these newer wheels on the older cars...
