Hi Guys,
Slighty confused doing a TB change and cam seals. The rear exhaust cam does not align with the case split but the timing mark on the front sprocket is aligned with the cam cover. I want to change out the front cam seals. Due to the fact that the front intake cam seal is nicely cemented into to place some one was into the front cam seals at some point in this engines life. Engine ran great, but when we got the car in May of 2013 we were getting a P0114 code which was solved with a new CVVT solenoid.
I have done TB on 850 and 98 V70 that did not have CVVT. My thinking is to align the rear cam shaft to the block line then upon installing the front exhaust sprocket align the sprocket with the timing cover and the hash mark. The spring loaded sprocket does rotate clockwise.
Would like some guidance for removal of exhaust cam sprocket and install suggestions.

If you move the engine CCW to get the marks aligned then the cam will end up advanced like you found it. The marks are aligned when the CVVT hub is at its retard end point. WHen you turn engine CCW the cam will not move until the hub travels far enough for the cam to reach the advanced end point.
As a further complication, that engine will have a spring in its CVVT that unwinds the CVVT to the advanced end point.

Did you remove the CVVT hub on the exhaust camshaft to change its seal? If not then you just need to set the CVVT preload.
To set the preload:
Line up all of timing marks and install the timing belt.
Rotate the engine two revolutions clockwise back to the timing marks.
Rotate clockwise an additional 90 degrees and then rotate the engine back, counterclockwise, to the timing marks.
Remove the timing belt from the camshafts and then thread it back on starting at your intake cam sprocket and, as you start the belt onto the exhaust camshaft sprocket, move the sprocket back to the timing mark.
Rotate by hand another couple of revolutions, recheck your marks, and recheck the tensioner indicator. I always recheck the tensioner again after I start the car and, in my case, it usually takes about three adjustments to get it correct.
That sounds weird but the CVVT sprocket and the camshaft move independently, not like the intake camshaft where the sprocket is tied directly to the camshaft.
If you removed the hub to replace the seal then there is a different procedure and I can post up the VIDA procedure for you. The good news is that, from your pictures, you have the camshaft adjustment tool which you will need if the hub came off.

1. For seal removal: I use sheet metal screws (be careful not to nick mating surfaces). For installation, I use plumbing PVC coupler. Info in forum timing belt DIY thread.
2. For VVT hub setting. If you understand how the static hubs work (such as in 1993-1998 models), then the VVT concept is just a logical next step in engineering design of the VVT.
- In the VVT design, the OUTER section moves independently from the INNER section, thus the VVT concept to allow the valves to be advanced vs retarded.
- The VVT OUTER section (the toothed part) has a fixed relationship with the crank and the timing belt. No matter what it is, the timing belt has a fixed relationship with the crank and cams x2.
- The VVT INNER section is mated to the camshaft via the big T55 bolts. The valves are either advanced or retarded by the solenoid, which channels engine oil to different chambers.
The trick is to understand how this works.

I completed the TB, front and rear cam seals and PCV last night. I followed the video steps and all aspects of the cam and crank alignment fell into place perfectly. During the PCV cleaning I found that removing the radiator fan and the ETM opened access to the 17mm coolant bolt on the intake manifold. Since I had so much removed from around the engine I also replaced 6 of the coolant lines. It was very pleasing when the car started and passed the glove test.
