Re: 2003 xc70 Engine Mount replacement
If I recall from the passenger side with a box end wrench - may have used some sort of breaker bar attachment. OR - if that was not it then either a 1/4" ratchet or a fixed 3/8" breaker. All I remember is it took several tries and various approaches until I got it. One of these three was what I used. Once it gets going it is not that bad. You got to stick what ever tool up and thread it through other items in the way - not much room to work in.

After thinking about it some more - I now recall sticking an extension through the gap, installing the socket and then it was not bad. If you have a 15mm in 1/4" that would be ideal otherwise 3/8" is really tight - a wobble attachment would also help or maybe a short 3/8" 15mm socket to a 1/4" adapter then a 1/4 6" or greater extension to the ratchet. I did have to use the prior described approach for some part of the repair - maybe that is how I did the top.
On my 2wd I was able to put a spanner through the hole in the underside where the exhaust goes into the engine bay....just enough room for a spanner...I didn't have enough room for a socket and extension...I tried....then the socket got trapped under the ARB which was very annoying. May not work on the XC70...guessing you might have a drive shaft in the way for the rear wheels!
I did the trial awhile back and i'm sure that 3/8" extension wouldn't work because the gap was tiny. I can't remember if I tried the 1/4" extension but I tried to find a way to tackle that lower bolt but couldn't find a solution so I didn't replace the mounts.
I remembered that I did try using the exhaust area to see if I could fit something in there but I think you wouldn't have enough space to break that bolt loose.
Next time, i'll try to take a photo of that area when I take off the belly pan cover.

Yea my extension definitely didn't fit either. I may have used an extra long spanner I think as I do have a set of those and was using them that day. There was enough room to get a hand on the spanner from what I remember

I got mine off with a 3/8" or 1/4" extension - either a 14mm or 15mm. Do it last, with all the other mounts loosened up and the engine slightly lifted. I did it so I know it works - may be the engine weight is not allowing you the play you need.
Sadly after a couple of hundred miles of driving I have to report that I still have an annoying knock/rattle coming from the front of the car....although not as bad as it was previously. I recently did the front and rear mounts plus the torsion mount. When I did the front mount the "mechanic" who did my clutch had forgotten to put the lower bolt back onto the mount...or it had fallen out since the work was done! Having thought about the fixes so far I came up with a new theory that maybe the violent shaking of the engine (due to the missing mount bolt) might have caused other damage elsewhere. Armed with the new theory I took a look at the old rear mount bracket that came off the car....sure enough there was a rub mark on it which I had dismissed previously as being caused by the rear mount collapsing slightly. Taking a look from the top of the engine I can see the turbo fresh air (I think) inlet crosses the top of the engine mount bracket....tracking the pipe back I found a broken bracket where the metal section of pipe should be bolted to the engine! I may have a look around on flea bay for a used pipe but if anyone has done a quicker fix it would be good to hear.
Now I'm starting to worry about what other damage might have been caused...I think I will change the last remaining engine mount at the next service...I think it may have taken quite a beating!

You are diligent. It is a good thing.
Your 2003 is not too old to be retired, but it will need your attention to keep you safe and joyful on the road.
If you are planning on keeping this car for another 50k+ miles, then you would want to replace ALL mounts. As your pocket permits, take on the front suspension, brakes, tires, heating and cooling system, sensors, and ALL fluid change, ETM and other as it surfaces.
There won't be a dull moment.
I have 2001 V70XC, which I wanted to trade-off at 118k-mi but our family decided to keep it b/c body and interior was too good. The DIY maintenance in past three years has been rewarded - time and money best spent. By 136k-mi it was a Stage 0, now close to 156k and running strong.
