I bought a used rad out of a 1999 R AWD not realizing the transmission line connections were different. It also has the overflow on the top above the top rad hose so I just capped that off with a hose and bolt. Otherwise they are the same. I took the transmission connections out of the 98 V70 rad and put them in the 99 R AWD rad. It seems to work. I just did it hours ago and I went for a short drive.

Has anyone else tried this? I'm just wondering if there will be problems with the transmission cooling because of the connectors being different. I'm thinking of leakage inside the rad.

Any experience or thoughts will be appreciated.

How did you deal with the sockets on the transmission cooler? I tried a similar thing except I was trying to use a '96 turbo radiator in a '99 XC. The oil cooler didn't matter in my case since it isn't in the radiator on a '99 but I did get as far as swapping the sockets for the transmission cooler lines. They seemed to swap fine and seal the oil part well (the threads were the same) but my fear was coolant leaking and I gobbed on a ton of RTV as I re-installed the sockets into the cooler.

In the end I gave up on it since the overflow was different and on the '99 radiator it wasn't just a hole with a nipple into the tank. It appeared to be baffled internally. In your case you can just put a plug on the overflow nipple on the radiator and call it good - leaving your overflow tank setup as it is.

Thanks for the input Lee. I did consider trying to apply extra sealant but I was running out of daylight and it was dropping from a toasty -14 celsius back down to -18 overnight so I just wanted to get it done. There was an O ring on the old sockets so I just took the ones off the AWD rad and put them on too. As you said the sockets threaded in fine. The overall length of the part going into the rad was the same, but the actual threaded part was longer on the 98 rad. The 99 rad had shorter thread and extra O rings, that's what made me wonder about the seal internally. I think the part inside the rad that the sockets screw into draw tight against the sockets so probably it will be okay. If not it was only a $40 experiment.

Another day of driving and no sign of leaks so I'm calling it a success.
