2000 AWD S70 Cracked Exhaust System

Post by calvolvo »

Hey Guys, I have a 2000 S70 AWD, as you can see from the photo my exhaust pipe cracked in half directly after the catalytic converter. I applied one of those general auto parts store patch kits but I know its not surviving outside a turbocharged exhaust. What are the chances of getting it either welded or having a sleeve put in? I'm bringing it to a local mechanic tomorrow and am curious what kind of damage we are looking at for basically replacing most of the exhaust system. :?

Out of the 5 V70s we have in the family 4 of them have had the same pipe failure. It usually costs about $40.00 for the shop to weld it up. 3 of the five cars this has happened to the exhaust was not connected to the crossmember where the driveshaft carrier bearing attaches.

Thanks so much, I wonder what it is about this section of the exhaust that lends itself to failure, feel like I dodged a bullet here

Your exhaust system is 15 years old, so that's 15 years of extreme heat and cold cycles.

I think I've had 5 of them welded now.

I had my NA sleeved and welded, at least once. It may have been twice. Ultimately I had to bite the bullet on a new system, which if I recall correctly including aftermarket CAT was around $600 plus. Replacement with a Volvo exhaust would have been about $1,300. The welding and sleeving each time was around $50.

When you go to get it welded stay away from the big chain muffler places like Midas since they will insist on selling you a new system. You need to find a mom and pop muffler shop - my go to guy is Buzz at Buzz's Mufflers. Buzz welds and his mom runs the cash register.

Found what seems to be a reputable mechanic in up state NY who said they can weld it. Hopefully will have it back in a day or two. :)
