1999 V70 Drivers side Latch replacement key lock issue

Post by scanboltron »

So my front drivers side door stopped opening. It wouldn't open from the outside or the inside. After a bit of searching I found the diagnosis was probably a bad latch. I got the door open by repeatedly pulling the door handle and kicking the door. The latch was just not working at all.

Today I got a junkyard latch and replaced the latch. Everything is working fine mechanically now except the key doesn't work in the door lock. Its the only door that has a key so I cant go and unlock from the passenger side.

Has anyone had this issue before? Are latches matched up to keys? Any help is much appreciate. Thanks in advance.

The problem is the rod that extends from the back of the lock cylinder to the latch assembly. That rod doesn't automatically line itself up with the socket and it has to be coaxed into position. Directly above the latch on the end of the door, more or less lined up with the key, there is a small plug that covers a small hole. The purpose of that hole is to line the rod up and guide it into the socket by inserting a small screwdriver or even a coat hanger.

At this stage the patch of least resistance might be to remove the lock cylinder and then re-install it while guiding the rod onto the socket.

What you are aiming for is the white plastic socket that looks like a big phillips head in this picture.

Just had the same issue with a customer's 99 V70. Managed tp get the door card off but can't open the door with much poking around and cursing.

If I could have a picture of a latch assembly it would help though the aim is to buy one tomorrow and once it's in my hand I'll be able to see which mechanism lifts the latch arm. I'll post a photo of which arm unlocks the assembly.
