2000 V70R - Radio/CD - CD player not working

I have a spare model 901 Volvo 3CD/radio/cassette unit I picked up cheap. I had the code so installed it to see if it worked. Radio seems to be fine (no cassettes to hand to try), but when I loaded a 3CD cartridge with 3 CD's in it the unit just kept cycling through the load sequence.

Is it possibly a case of the CD loader drive belt just needs to be cleaned (seen a how-to on-line) or is it a symptom of the CD unit is goosed?

The laser pickup needs to be cleaned. It's not seeing the cd. Google Volvo 901 cd changer repair and you'll be able to find several articles on how to do it. Clean the rollers while you're in there.

Many thanks for your guidance! I've already cleaned the rollers, but had planned to clean the laser with a disc/laser cleaner I have, but that won't work if it won't load!

I look up the laser cleaning process and feed back if I have success.

I think you may be able to see it with the cover off on a 901. You may need to tape a q-tip to a long screwdriver to reach it through the face. Use the same rubbing alcohol you cleaned the rollers with. I had both problems. First the cd's wouldn't load, then they just cycled through.

FWIW - There are no belts in the changer. All gears.

Thanks guys. Google'd it and found a helpful write up with pictures. I've cleaned the laser and will re-try tomorrow to see if it fixed it.

I have another question. Didn't notice before, but the front cover flap for the 3 disc cassette won't stay closed. Had a look to see what closes it and can't see anything like a spring or anything. No loose bits inside of it. Is there a motor or lever that should hold the flap closed?

It's a tiny spring that appears almost impossible to fix. I just leave a cartridge in it.

Thanks for the info. I took the original unit apart an saw there should be a tiny 'hair spring' behind the LH end of the door flap when looking from the front. Must have knocked it out when cleaning and not realised. Can't find it anyway.

Re-tried the unit after cleaning the laser and all works now as it should - the spring!

The only thing I would add is to use a good light to shine through the hole that they mention to put the cotton bud through. The laser is on the lower side, under the yellow sticker area.

To access it, I carefully wound out the cassette drawer by turning the black toothed gear CCW (that is in the hole with the pink circle around it). Do this slowly, until you get the drawer 1" extended and then carefully pull it out slowly.

Once cleaning is completed, slowly slide the drawer back in.
