2002 XC70 Fan Squeak

Post by Stephen0523 »

Hello.

Recently my 2002 XC 70 has been squeaking when the fan is on low first or second light.

The squeaking sound seems to be coming from the passenger side.

Would anyone know how I can get in there to apply some lubrication?

Thanks in advance

Stephen

really hard to lubricate even after removing it from near the passenger feet, because the upper bearing is causing the noise and it's not accessible

better replace the fan with used one off Ebay (you can keep the resistor)- look at the pictures for the pin in the middle of the blades- if it's rusted, chances are it will squeak too in cold weather.

This is a great How-to with pics. Notice the pin in the middle of the blower, looks clean - well, that was a new one
An angled screw driver is of great use because 2 screws are really hard to reach

I would not go with a used fan - the lube grease will be old and crusty and destined to make noise sooner than later. You can take the motor apart and grease the two bearings on each end. You have to remove the squirrel cage fan, which is not easy as it is a press fit. It will come off slowly and takes some time and effort. You need to take the fan off and then the entire motor out of the plastic assembly - then you will see the bearings on each end - then open up the motor, clean the old crud and relube with some quality grease.

I bought a new non-OEM fan assembly and took the old one apart to see what failed - this is how I learned the grease was old and basically no longer there. Now I have a spare sitting for the next fan that goes.

The cheap route, under $50, if you do not want to rebuild is to buy a non-OEM motor/fan with plastics and replace the assembly using what is needed from the old unit - like the electronics.
