Thanks guys. The listing for ebay has lapsed, but I know the tool (the AST one I mentioned earlier) and it eventually sold for $67 US, for me that is $90 US shipped or over $110 CDN. Way more than it probably cost originally!
I considered removing the bulb, but also consider disturbing the dash on an old Volvo nuts unless it has to be done for fear of old plastic breaking!
The tape method is the simplest if not particularly elegant solution.
I'm just anal about stuff being done 'properly'. Comes from being an engineer from 3 generations I guess.
Neil.

If you're considering the Vol-FCR and VAG/COM KKL cable route, then you might also consider the volvo850diag and ELM327 USB cable route.
With Vol-FCR you'll get much better coverage of ECUs in several different Volvo model/years, so it's a much more useful tool than volvo850diag for a shop or someone that operates on more than just '96-'98 850/S70/V70/XC70.
However, you can do some things with volvo850diag that you can not do with Vol-FCR, eg, reading the vehicle mileage, and changing the SERVICE Reminder Intervals. And, yes, volvo850diag will work on the '98 S70/V70/XC70, not just the '96-'97 850.
Normally, with volvo850diag scanning you need to submit the contents of the capture log to kwpd3b0_interpreter.html to get it interpreted. However, when resetting the SERVICE light this isn't necessary. After volvo850diag completes the reset operation and you turn the ignition off, then turn the engine on, you'll see the SERVICE light has gone out. There's no need to interpret anything unless you want to. There's two buttons to perform a SERVICE light reset in volvo850diag. One says ATZ Reset SRI. That's the simple one, but it takes longer to run. The other one is the * button at the end of the ECU 51 (COMBI) line. That's the faster one.
You can use more than just one kind of ELM327 device -- eg, ELM327 USB cables based on CP210x chip, OBDLink SX cables, various ELM327 Bluetooth tools (rather than the 1 single kind of tool that is matched to your Vol-FCR version) -- but the CP210x-based ELM327 USB cable is the easiest to get going, since volvo850diag v0.7 is distributed to automatically work with it, and automatically tries to connect with the COM port associated with "\Silabser0".

I hadn't heard of the volvo850diag software and will now have to look it up. I have a Bluetooth ELM327 running Torque Pro that I use on the non-Volvos in the household, also have a VIDA/DICE set up using an old laptop running Win 7 PRO with VIDA 2012A running in VMware. Can't get the 2014A version that came with the DICE unit to work. Can only get it to Log-in page, it will now log-in to next page only if I use Enter button and not wireless mouse, and then freeze. Supplier has had many attempts to get this to work but may have to look at another source for 2014A to run it on Win 7 rather than VMware.
I did buy the Draper unit and it is hopefully on its way from Europe as we speak.
I love all this stuff, but have to admit to a big software void in knowledge, but am trying to learn!
Input is appreciated again, and now off to look at the Volvo850diag software.

Neil,
I suggest making it easy on yourself, and bypass volvo850diag for 2-3 months. The reasons being:
- Your plate is already full.
- You've already started down the Vol-FCR path and that will likely be your preferred path for SERVICE light reset.
- Your ELM327 is a Bluetooth, not the CP210x chip based ELM327 USB cable that volvo850diag comes distributed to work with automatically.
- It'll take me at least 2-3 months to finish the next release of volvo850diag, and that release will include some already working ease-of-use changes so you can switch between ELM327 devices (CP210x-based ELM327 USB cables, OBDLink SX cables, Bluetooth ELM327, etc) via a pull-down list, rather than having to edit the .html file.
Since both Vol-FCR and the DRAPER unit will likely solve your need to reset the SERVICE light, you probably will be better off to wait on the next volvo850diag release, if you do decide to explore volvo850diag's SERVICE light resetting capabilities. That way you can avoid the hassle of editing the volvo850diag.html file to change scanner_type from "ELM327" to "ELM327-Bluetooth".
