Hello everyone just bought a 98 s70 T5M today after my 854R died finally. I think i got a really good deal and definitely the better end of the bargain. So the bad: 216k, clogged pcv, bad rear strut mount, tiny radiator leak,a but worn tie rod ends, exhaust leak, broken dipstick. The Good: timing belt done 10k ago, clutch done 8k ago, brakes and rotors done 1k ago, doesnt leak any oil, even compression across all cylinders, turbo pulls like a raped ape, and finally i only paid $660 for it. So things i have ordered and will be here tomorrow: fcp pcv kit (genuine volvo), genuine volvo spark plugs, bougicord wireset, bosch rotor/cap, oil & filter, fuel filter, air filter, cabin filter, vacuum hose, myle tie rod ends, myle HD sway bar links, dipstick/tube and oring, 35w H7 hid conversion kit with 10000k bulbs, rear strut mounts for both sides. So i have attached pictures and would like any input and advice on next step I should take as far as maintenance. I dont want to upgrade too much and im not expecting it to be a 300hp volvo. I want any preventative maintenence to guarantee she sees her 300k anniversary lol. Thanks in advance

Nice ride! Besides timing components, most of the critical maintenance tasks these cars demand are about keeping the magic liquids in. If you keep your coolant (heater core, coolant hoses, radiator) and oil (PCV, oil cooler) inside their respective systems, that'll cover most of the opportunities for catastrophic failure.

Welcome aboard MVS,
Nice ride T5-M. How old are your struts/shocks and suspension system (four corners) beside the broken rear shock mounts? If you planned to keep this vehicle beyond several years, you may want to consider more investments. Also, will she be a daily drive, or weekend (street) commuter? Keep the maintenance up and she will last beyond 300K.

Carefully inspect all coolant hoses, especially the the turbo coolant hoses, and you're going to want to change that leaky radiator.

I usually put a genuine Volvo lower rad hose in there the first time I do a tune-up, especially if it's a turbo car, then I know it is good for however long I have the car. The other hoses you can easily see, inspect and change as needed. Do NOT buy any hoses from URO. Gates is pretty good, so is the Napa house brand, the Volvo branded ones are expensive but very high quality. Flush the cooling system super well and refill it with fresh Zerex G-05.

The turbo oil drain return line gaskets should be done when you do the little turbo coolant hoses.

I would pay $660 for that car!

You mentioned worn tie rod ends. If you replace, it is my experience that most of the slack develops in the inner tie rods. So it saves labor to just replace both inners and outers at the same time. If you do, you can usually reuse your original inner boots--which are expensive from Volvo and not very good quality aftermarket.

Thank you for the reply's everyone. Juan62 the struts and shocks were replaced a year ago. The shock mount got broken due to a nice snow bank and bald front tires. Erikv i ordered a radiator its a aftermarket one but i figure cant go wrong with $75. (hopefully at least lol).

As to the hoses ive checked em all and they seem to still be in good shape. The tie rods i ordered both inner and outer set cause it was a bit cheaper than buying them separately. Just replaced the intercooler yesterday and that was a royal PITA. Cause of the snow i wasnt able to jack it up and take things out the bottom so i worked it out of the top and kept the a/c condensor and radiator hooked up. I did have to remove top rad hose though to get it out

Welcome to MVS! Nice looking car and a great price!

With that aftermarket radiator, watch how you tighten the top hose. The aftermarket rads don't have a brass insert in the top hose so don't always tighten up properly and can weep. Strongly suggest replacing the top hose as it will be more supple and adapt to the shape better. I think the suggestion was to use a Volvo OE lower radiator hose not radiator. Having said that I only use OE radiators and hoses from experience of aftermarket issues. At $75 for a radiator it worth a shot though!

Good luck and look forward to see the progress!

Neil.
