1999 V70 T5 Immobilizer issue?
Hello. I started my car yesterday and after about 10 seconds, the engine suddenly shut off. The transmission shift up light, ets light, check engine light, and battery light come on after it dies. The car will turn over, but not even try to start unless you lock the car, unlock it, and try again. I went out and bought a new antenna ring at the dealership and installed it today. I also let the battery sit disconnected all night and checked all the fuses. The car started right up, ran smooth for about 10 seconds, then suddenly shut off. I am experienced with soldering and electrical repairs, so hopefully I will be able to fix this myself. What are the chances that my immobilizer module suddenly died?

Not likely and that is a good thing. If it did you would need to buy new keys and have them programmed. About $200.00 / key.aharres wrote:What are the chances that my immobilizer module suddenly died?
The fact that it started and ran for about 10 seconds indicates that the immobilizer function is being satisfied. A bad antenna ring or immobilizer problem will kill the car immediately after it starts.
Based on the behavior I think you may have a bad fuel pump relay. Try jumping the socket positions associated with pins 15 and 87 on relay 103 with a piece of wire and see if the car runs then.
If the fuel pump is running and you have good fuel pressure you are likely going to need a VIDA/DICE scan to get to the bottom of it.

If it is immobiliser it would kill the engine for 2-3 seconds max.Do you have a red led light in the center of dashboard just by the windshield?Does it illuminate when engine stops?

I'm at work right now, but earlier I jumped the two pins to the fuel pump amd it ran for a good 10 seconds before the jumper wire burned up. I yanked the wire out and it killed the engine so I think it must be the fpr. I feel pretty stupid now because apparently it's a common issue, but I didn't even think of that. Thank you everyone and I'll report back if this fixes it on monday.

The wire burning up is strange. The fuel pump doesn't draw that much current normally and I've driven home on a paper clip which isn't the greatest conductor. Make sure you jump the correct slots on the socket, they are the two that are perpendicular to each other. If it still gets real hot then the fuel pump itself is suspect. If the fuel pump is bad it isn't that big of a deal unless you have AWD.

And she runs! It was the fuel pump relay. I wonder if this is the reason my car would sometimes take 2 or 3 seconds to start. I opened up the relay and the mechanical part still moves freely. None of the capacitors are busted and nothing looks burned up. The only thing I noticed is this resistor that just barely has a piece of solder attached to it. It looks like the resistor moved out of position when the board was getting soldered. I assume a machine did it because it's surface mount. I wonder how many boards this happened to?
