Figure about 3 hrs. at a leisurely pace for a first go. Could be done faster, but if you allow that, you shouldn't be stressed.

Thanks. This is my first Volvo too. I've worked on others that my friend owned, but all that really consisted of was brake jobs, shocks/struts and the ABS modules. I'll most likely wait until it starts to warm up in the morning, make a full pot of coffee and go at it!

Also, and I tend to go off-topic in threads. Is there a tried and true method of steam cleaning the motor? I thought about putting plastic bags over the box that holds the modules and another over the fuse box. The car has just over 180k on it and really needs a cleaning, I'm just afraid of messing anything up. Again, I've been working on cars a long time over 20 years, but some are finicky in certain ways.

Old thread but the question is brand name.

I understand it is Bosch SR0483X ("X" means re-mfg), which is about $170 at eeuroparts dot com.

Question is: what is everyone using, and what is your experience?

a- Used OEM?
b- Local parts store no name brand?
c- Bosch SR0483X?

I always keep a couple of used oem units around. Of all the c
Volvos I've had I have only had to replace one starter.

I think I would probably go with used OEM too. Never had a starter problem with any one my Volvos.

I installed a remanufactured Bosch SR0483X that I bought from FCP last year (Jan 2014). It has been working flawlessly so far.

Here is the line item on my invoice from FCP for the part:
SR0483X Volvo Starter Motor (850 C70 V70 S40 S60 S80 XC70 XC90 S70 V40) - Bosch SR0483X (1) @ $168.95 = $168.95

I had to replace an OEM Volvo at about 175,000 miles. I replaced another as preventive maintenance ( read my wife's car) while I was doing a PCV service since everything is so much more accessible with the intake manifold out of the way.

I'm looking at replacing the starter in my '96 850 GLT.
I have no audible click when ignition is turned.
Verified 12.6V at battery, 12.5V+ at starter, and 11.7V on solenoid as ignition is turned to Start. This should eliminate ignition and PNP switch as possible causes.
Reading this forum gives me confidence that I can do this job on my own, but as I look at choices of New/Rebuilt/Junkyard starters, I am asked if I want 1.4kw or 1.7kw. How do I know which I need?

I've never heard of that distinction, 1.4 kW or 1.7 kW. The only variations I have seen are the California version and the rest of the planet version. Even with the "California" version I think you can swap the brackets and get it to work.

I've had to replace a couple of them and I used the auto parts store rebuilt versions either from Advance or O'Reilly and both worked fine. They were both Bosch but on one of them I had to swap brackets to get it to work.

Thank for the tips, my starter is going out on my 2000 S70 GLT. I'm kinda daunting doing this.
Car I own: 2000 Volvo S70 GLT 130k Stock with OEM replaced parts.
