I apologize if this has been asked before but I have searched and could not find anything around this.
I have a 2005 V70 2.4L that has an ok engine and transmission. Shifting can be delayed and engine makes some noises. But, the car has 186,000 miles on it so that is to be expected.
I bought a 2001 V70 T5 parts car for some body parts that I need. Thing is the car runs excellent and drives much better than my daily driver. It has 102,000 miles on it and has had the timing belt swapped out. I was thinking that I would try to swap the engine & transmission out into my 2005 V70. Has anyone attempted to do that?
I would swap to this car as my daily driver but the interior is full of cigarette smoke smell. Imagine bowling alley mixed with 1960's Vegas casino and a touch of Don Draper's office.
Problems I can think of in doing this are the ECU/TCU compatibility, wiring harness, and CEL issues. I am hoping someone will say just plug and play but I doubt that is going to happen.

since your engine is 2.4 I am guessing its not turbo charged and in order for the T5 engine to work on your vehicle I think there will need to be much more replaced then just the engine, other wise your fuel pump might not be enough to keep up, also those older transmission that went with t5 engines have a very bad reputation, I personally would not try to attempt a swap like that.

I would think the work involved to achieve this is too much. Definately not plug and play.
It would be easier to service your 2005 and iron out the issues it has.
While the T5 is a great engine, the 2001 transmissions were a plagued year. You will no doubt see issues later down the track that will make you wish you hadn't tried!
I would look at replacing the interior in the 2001 and driving it like it is. You should be able to replace headlining and carpets more easily than replacing an entire engine and gearbox.

There are products out there now that can remover 99% of smoke smell.
If it's so bad that it won't come out, swapping with some good used seats and maybe even door panels and some used carpet sections is the way to go, (then have the headliner scrubbed).
All this can be done in a few hours, FAR less time than to attempt the other which won't work anyway!

Thanks everyone for your replies.
It sounds like it is too much of a job for me to take on. If I had time to let both cars sit for a while, I would attempt to tackle it. That being said, it did not cross my mind to just clean up the 2001 and keep it. I am not sure how my wife will like it, but it would be fun to keep around. If anything, I might be able to clean it up and sell it for more than I paid for it.
Thanks again for your help.
