New to this forum but I need some advice. (I am not a car genius so please be patient with me haha)
A couple months ago my car's ETM started going out...Car revs, goes into limp mode, and acts like it's about to stall out (has only actually stalled once). I have to leave the car off from 20min-3hrs before it begins to work as though nothing was ever wrong. It's thrown the ETS light three times but has wigged out over 10 times in the last three months. I am pretty confident that the car needs a new throttle module which brings me to my question...
I have a friend who can put a new throttle module into the car but I'm trying to decide whether to buy a standard Throttle Housing from the Volvo Parts Webstore (cost: 355.97 + 100.00 core fee), or an ETM Turbo Pre-Programmed from XeModex (cost: 499.00 + 100.00 core fee).
Advice on which way to go? Which part is better? Has anyone had issues with either of these? What might be the cost to get the Volvo part programmed at the dealership after it is installed? Any other thoughts and advice is appreciated.

A previous owner fitted a Xemodex modified contactless ETM to my 2000 V70R. It has so far been good and should hopefully last out the remainder of the car's life (I hope!).
Is the ETM in your car the original? Typically you can tell by the label on the front f it being white rather than yellow. Yellow is the Volvo upgraded version which is supposed to be an improvement.
If your ETM is the original, then it really is your call. Perhaps someone here can confirm, but I believe you will have to have the Volvo unit programmed by the dealer to work with your car. That also means you will have to take the car to them for the repair. Hopefully someone will confirm this for us.
Based on that assumption the DIY version will work out cheaper if the Xemodex unit is cloned to match your car, so your friend can install it.
Double check the Xemodex unit is programmed/cloned in the price, and if the Volvo unit includes the programming to match your car. It is a fiddly job if your car is a turbo, but not so bad if it is not.
Neil.

Just checked the label. It is yellow. So that was the upgrade that they put in as part of the recall? Well done Volvo
I know if I get the volvo part then I have to take it to the dealership...no idea how much it costs to program it though. The price of the Xemodex that I listed is for the pre-programmed module.

The Xemodex module, in theory, should last forever but one other thing you need to add to the equation is the obscene freight charge from Xemodex.

Lee,
Are you referring to the $50 shipping? Or is there another charge that I didn't see on there?

Another cost effective way to go is to find another yellow tag module out of a 2000 V70 XC. From my experience it would be a direct plug and play with no dealer programming. I have seen them on eBay for $50.00 to $80.00. This will immediately solve your problem but you may be here again when the used unit fails in a unknown amount of miles. Again cost is less.

About one hour to program at dealer, so figure 100-120 at shop rate. You can call them and get a quote, too. It's worth asking them their price on the part..they can be competitive.

I haven't looked lately but the last time I considered buying an ECU from them it was $75.00 to stick it in a box and mail it (ground shipping).AuntBirdie wrote:Lee,

Volvo part numbers 36050563 and 36050564 are refurbished ready to go parts which ALREADY have firmware installed.
The 36050563 has the most common firmware pre-installed for turbos from 1999 to 2001.
It MAY even come with a contactless conversion with a Volvo badged Sacer sensor as when people cut the shaft for contactless conversion and send a used ETM to Volvo for a core return the Magnetti Marelli company, which rebuild these in Italy, didn't want to replace the throttle shaft.
You may end up with a 16 year old housing from Volvo but as far as I can tell the contact sensors are new.
XeModex's warranties are what may swing you their way.

Thank you all for your help! I am certainly leaning towards XeModex. My husband hates my car...but if I can prove to him that she's not a complete lemon then I would love to make her last
