1998 s70 Alloy wheel Refurbishment ..do it myself?

Post by JRev »

I've never had alloy wheels on my black S70 as they came with steel wheels and after all the work I've done the car, getting alloys has been left until now but i've attached pics of the 2nd hand wheels i purchased and they look in good condition but does the inner part look like it needs to be sanded down? or if a tyre was put on would that cause issues if not sanded?

If the inner bead is indeed as rough/flaking as it appears in the second photo, it would seem prudent to scrape and sand them. What you have there looks like a recipe for slow leaks and the attendant edge wear of the tires if their pressure is not checked often.

Those should look great on your S70. While you have the tires off is a great time to clean up curb rash with a power sander and touch it up.

That was my concern, slow leak, as the one uploaded is the wheel in the worst condition (inner bead) the others are OK but will clean up all four.

Oh and I agree, they should look great with the S70 so thats the next task, get these wheels sorted!

How much would it be to powder coat these? The cleaning process should remove all the loose flaking stuff and a good powder-coating company should rub down the curb rash before coating, In Canada where I live it cost me about $350 for 4 wheels to be re-finished (about 190 pounds). If you plan to keep the car for some time it is worth considering. Also worth checking if you can get a better set for less than re-finishing. You could try yourself and save money, but it is not my personal choice.

Below is a photo of some Kia wheels I had re-done last year:
Re-finished powder-coated wheels
Re-finished powder-coated wheels
The other advantage is I find the coating doesn't scratch or chip as easily as painted wheels.

Cheers Neil. Yes it would cost about £180-200 as made some enquires and I've also been looking at buying a new set as an investment, but the aftermarket ones don't appeal to me much, plus I think these wheels are perfect for a black S70.

I'm going to clean them up anyway and get these wheels sorted as best I can but I'm always keeping an eye out for a set of new wheels.

I love the turbo wheels. I had a chance to buy a set with tires this winter and passed on it. Still regret it and still looking for another set.

IMHO, those Columba rims are the best looking ever offered on the P80 cars and still my favorite of all Volvo wheels. They look like they were actually designed to cool the brakes.

Before you do any work, have a good tire shop spin the rims and check for trueness. I bought four refurbished Volvo wheels from a reputable wheel dealer. They were beautiful, but two were out of spec (bent).
The car was out of service for the couple of weeks it took to track down two more matching (true) wheels.

When I purchased these wheels, they where as a set of 5, purchased them after a very long drive and one was badly bent, I mean visibly wrecked so thats why I haven't got round to sorting these wheels as was worried they may not be true but cheers for the reminder as I will definitely have these checked over before starting any work!

As an alternative I have been looking at these alloys

and yes I know they are wolfrace... but that oslo design would suit the black S70 as I'm tempted to buy a new set.
