There are those on here who believe in "waking up" the head bolts with a hammer blow or two before loosening. Some swear by impact wrenches for removing them. I think luck has a bit to do with it as well. Although I haven't tested the theory, running the engine to heat things up a bit before attempting removal might work. Trouble is, usually, the reason you're removing the head bolts is that the engine won't run . . .

That occurred to me ... after it broke. It helps shatter any corrosion cement.

Success! After soaking a week in Liquid Wrench. I covered the top of the block with Vaseline and Saran Wrap to keep any chips from going any undesirable places. I started with a forward 1/8" cobalt drill bit (with a homemade bushing made out of glued together #8 steel flat washers to keep the bit centered). As the bit started to bite I felt the bolt come loose. I suspected a forward drilling would unwind any residual tension in the threads. I then switched to a 3/16 reverse drill bit and the bolt screwed right out. Took all of about 5 minutes. Took me longer to get the tools out. I stuck a magnet down in the hole a number of times to remove any leftover chips.
