98 V70 ATP-AT-205 Oil Additive Question

Post by 98v70dad »

I generally don't believe in adding stuff to my cars fluids as a fix, but I've researched ATP-AT-205 and I have read many positive comments about this stuff on this website and others. What I've read from many sources is that this plasticizer has an amazing effect on small oil leaks. I have some small leaks and think this might be a good preventative solution. I don't think it will do any damage other than the 10 buck hit to my wallet if it doesn't help.

So, I am planning on adding a bottle to my oil. The instructions say that it treats 6 quarts, but it doesn't say how long to leave it in. I can put it in a week before an oil change or put it in with an oil change and it will be in the system for about two months. I'm inclined to put it in before the change so I can control the exposure time.

I know others on this website have used it and my question is did you put it in right before or right after an oil change? Also, if you used it and wish you hadn't I would like to know about that also.

This thread and pic might change your mind about this crap

I would find the oil leaks and fix them with gaskets, o-rings, or washers

on edit - link was for sealer, not additive as proposed. Carry on and keep Volvos alive!!

I have added a bottle at oil change (and left it in until next oil change). In my experience, its a good idea and works well for those odd leaks you cant track down. I try to use the "thin" additive instead of the "thick gooey" one. I have had some degree of oil leaks on all 3 of my cars. 2 of them needed cam seals replaced and clogged PCV so def. look into those too.

ATP-AT-205 is not a sealer its a plasticizer that claims to return plasticity to old seals. I would not use a sealer either. Also, I didn't mention it but my car is a non-turbo.

I've already replace the cam seals and have done the PCV modification. I believe I have valve seal leaks. I could live with them but I don't want to if this will help remediate them.

ATP AT-205 is fine.
You can leave it in the entire time. Some seals take several hours (of run time) to seal up . If the seal has a break in it you should replace rather than try a sealant.

I have added it, right after an oil change. This one and Auto-Rx are the only voodoo-in-a-can I have ever used.

On the product it says it takes XXX hours or miles to work. I don't remember off-hand what it was. After PCV and cam seals, it helped my car with symptoms of slight RMS leak and valve seals. I don't want to burn valves, I can't live with leaky stem seals.

Steve, I think the other thread OP indicated that was a form-a-gasket product used instead of a seal, not an additive. Someone tried to patch a pinhole in the line with it I thought it said?
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )

1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Yes, the link with the gunked up picture for that turbo line was a seal former, not an additive.
