2004 S80 T6 Clunk sound when shift to D and R

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2004 S80 T6 Clunk sound when shift to D and R

Post by ninnemand »

The S80 has 124k miles. Recently when shifting into D the front drivers side wheel makes a "clunking" sound. Shifting into R and D the same clunk is heard. Seems to be coming from behind the front drivers side wheel. Also the clunk can be heard when letting off the gas and pushing the gas pedal. I have a dealer appt. on Friday. Any guess what this could be. Probably something in the drive axle  but hopefully a motor mount.

First thought was the torque mount - I don't know where it is on the S80, but have you checked it If you have one?

My old S70 made that noise when one of the bushings was rotted out.

There is another possibility beside upper torque mount bushing and lower engine mount behind the engine that gone bad,I used to have the same problem once in while when it happen I just pop the front wheel center caps and tighten up the 14mm bolts that hold the driveshaft to the wheel hub because these bolts do get loose and the clunking noise disappear . Hope this helps...

Dealer diagnosis: "Install glue to the axle spline". It will take an hour and then the car needs to sit for 6 hours for the glue to dry.

So now I need the opinions on this procedure. I have been reading a little about this and I guess it is fairly common, but it does make removing the axle at a later date a PITA!!!!!

Yep and ask them to foot the bill for any documented extra time on front end repairs due to the glue.

The dealer is the last place I would have this fixed. Because of possible litigation for non standard repairs their creativity score is a zero. If glue fixes it a nicely machined spacer would have done it too, however dealers are not allowed to do this.
