The MAP sensor on my 1999 is before the turbo....right in front of the starter on the induction pipe. The MAT ( temp sensor) is right next to it. My MAP went at about 150k miles on my car.

The ETS light is pretty reliable at indicating problems. I agree that a yellow label ETB unit from 2011 shouldn't be dead but that light is indicative of an ETB failure

The yellow label is not an improved design, it's just a replacement.

I think I might invest in VIDA DICE as this is so intermittent chances are it won't throw a fault if I take it to my mechanic. If I do is there a scan I can do to test the ETM is good or bad?

There is a test in Vida however it's simply a VARIANCE TEST between sensor 1 and sensor 2. The test is only designed to work with post 2006 software.

The test can't tell you if the unit is intermittently faulty.

Only a scan WHILE ETS LIGHT IS ON will provide clues.

OK. I've ordered a VIDA DICE and will see what the scan results indicate.

In the meantime, today I had another start with ETS light on and the idle was alternating between really smooth and really rough. As I sat there it seemed to be associated with the AC cutting in and out! I had it set on AUTO. So I turned the fan control to off (0) and the idle went consistently rough. Switched it back to AUTO and when the fan kicked in (compressor???) the idle smoothed out again. Repeated this a few times with the same result.

I'm getting more confused! I'm going to set the climate control to manual low fan and see if that makes any difference for the next few days. Any bright ideas on this development?

It might be worth checking ( remove, inspect, clean) all ypur grounds on your car. Anytime you start seeing cross-talk between unrelated electrical things, grounds are suspect

Latest on this!

I took the car to my indy to have codes pulled with VIDA/DICE while I wait for mine to arrive from China. I wanted to run the ETM test. It wouldn't allow the test run as the software was not current - so it looks like someone installed a new ETM but didn't do the software upgrade. Apparently this now needs to go to a dealer for an upgrade......I'm hoping that may be the cause of the problems but will report back once done.

With key in PosII and engine off does ETM switch off and become silent??

This is the easiest way to tell if correct firmware is fitted.

Hi Mike,

With key in PosII the ETM makes a high pitched noise for I guess 8 secs or so and then goes silent. What does that indicate? When we had it hooked up to VIDA/DICE I'm pretty sure it wouldn't let us run the ETM test as the software was not current. It has a 2011 build date on the yellow sticker so I would have thought the software was at least that vintage. I've got it booked in to the dealer for an upgrade in a couple days time but don't really want to waste more money doing that unless it is required either for correct operation or to enable the ETM test to be run.

Go into the Network Tab on Vida and then highlight the ETM module.

Read off the 2 software numbers at the bottom of the report in the right hand pane and report them in. I can verify if they are for a 1999 2.4 LPT or not.

Oh. I didn't make a note of that while at my indy and my VIDA/DICE is still en-route from China! So I guess I'll keep my appointment with the dealer!
