First of all I feel it is only right and proper to say a big hello to all the members here, I have been a "lurker" and have found this site to be better than most and highly informative.
I'm Michael and live in a small village within the county of Lincolnshire in the UK. My hobbies are (well used to be before I got my infuriating Volvo) simply messing about with cars in between being a shift worker and a father of three Angels!
If I may ...down to business...
2001 Volvo V70 2.4 140bhp 169,000 miles Full service history including 2 x cambelt changes in its life. car is exceptionally clean.
Okay so I bought the car approx three weeks ago for £400, drove it approx 80 miles back to my home and car drove faultless.
Next day drove approx 20 miles all very smooth, then as soon as revs reached 4000rpm revs dropped and would not go above 2000 rpm. This happened o na regular basis so rightly or wrongly I identified the issues as the ETM.
I sent the ETM off tp have the contactless upgrade. Upon return the car would would not rev at all, it was as if the accelerator was disconnected, car just sat at tickover.
So I changed the accelerator pedal (complete unit with integral sensor) bought for £20 from a breakers (scrap yard) Fitted it and no change whatsoever.
Sent the ETM back it was re checked and found that the circuit board was at fault.
So I got a used ETM:
Car had battery disconnected for approx two days
Fitted the ETM
Switched on ignition and left it for approx 20 - 30 minutes
Started car
Car ran like a bag of spanners = it sounded like a 1940's diesel engine! it sounded like it was big time missing as if it was running on four or three cylinders. I took it for a drive and it kept losing revs and kangerooing.
So what have I done wrong?
I thought that if I swapped a ETM for the same ty[e (year and engine) there would be no software issues and all would be good?
I think having searched the net....not ideal but desperate times call for desperate measures that despite following what I thought ws the correct method for swapping the ETM that the "new" ETM is having a problem with the ECU?
So..any and all suggestions more than welcome
Kind regards
Michael

Troubleshooting 1999- on cars (late P80) requires VIDA software. I think the ECU software and ETM have to match or else they won't work together.

Well you have the wrong ETM software and possibly other undiagnosed problems.
Can you put the original one back in and scan the car with an OBDII scanner? Original problem could be anything really.
If you know someone with an Android phone you can download Torque and buy a bluetooth OBDII device called a ELM327 for about $20.
Best money you will ever spend:roll:

Mike...would the power on test tell Michael if he had a software EtM match?

I found one firmware level that tricks me on my 2000 V70 na which was a XC70 firmware however all other firmware levels (I've tested over 30 different firmware levels) make the ETM turn off after 8 seconds with ignition in PosII and engine off.
I recently repaired a 1999 S70 na that had wrong or corrupted firmware and after giving Henry the ECM numbers he found a suitable firmware version. If the OP can provide both ECM and ETM network software numbers Henry can tell the OP if he has a match or not.
If the ETM continues to whine after 8 seconds you definitely have a firmware mismatch.

I've attached picture that shows where to find these SW numbers.

If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer

Hi,
Really appreciate the time and effort taken in replying.
I do not have the original ETM. This second ETM has the cables cut through and I rejoined them together using the original wiring. (really was not happy at receiving it in that way)
I have an OBDII code reader.... will pop it on a get the new codes.
I don't have access to any professional diagnostic software that Volvo uses unless I go down to Volvo and chop off an arm and a leg for a diagnostic check then.
However if the "new" etm the one that whines for more than 8 seconds (constantly) is due to a firmware mismatch I would be happy to get Volvo to Match them up.
So going back to the original question..... can I just fit a used ETM from a Volvo with NA engine and approx the same year.... searches have shown people do this however with no issues, yet I am having issues !

You can't really do that.
You need to send it back to the animal that cut the wires and sent it to you and get your money back.

Nothing really wrong with rejoining wires as long as it's done properly (with solder & heatshrink)
There were at least 2 firmware levels for 2001 and that's just the up to .date ones. There were several out of date versions for the same year.
If you buy a cheap Vida Dice from China (go to the Tools section here for vendor names) you can read the engine ECU firmware and then Henry can get the ETM numbers you need.
Without this you are playing roullette with high dollar stakes.
