1998 s70 Replacing exhaust tip

Post by JRev »

I'm wanting to replace the exhaust tip with a new genuine one

http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts/ex ... e/1002446/

Has anyone here done this job, as I just looked under the rear and the fittings look as rusty as it gets, so am thinking it will be a pig of a job to remove? Any tips  be appreciated!

I recently harvested an exhaust tip from a 98 in the local junkyard. I got lucky and it wasn't too rusty. All I did was loosen the one bolt on the bottom side that holds the tip to the inner pipe and then I twisted, rocked and hammered a bit to break up the rust. At the time I was thinking I should have brought my WD-40 or P'blaster penetrating oil, but I was roughing it in the junkyard. After about 5 minutes of wrestling it, I got it to slide off of the tail pipe.

Cheers for the info - sounds like it may just look worse then it actually is to remove and lucky you salvaging a tip from the yard!

PB-Blaster, patience, and a bit of back and forth torque on the bolt. I replaced the rusty round one on my 850 with a new OE S70 oval tip. It fits the bumper slot nicely and was a cool upgrade.

Agreed! I thought the new oval tip looked pretty good too. Here is a before-and-after with the original rectangular tip (which has been repaired a time or two over the years to fill in holes and repaint) and a new oval tip harvested from the junkyard:

I've just a proper look at the area and it doesn't look clever, have uploaded some pics and also noticed some rust signs on the chassis.

Basically it looks like the exhaust bolts/hanger and parts that secure the hanger are disintegrating away so I'll need more then an exhaust tip, possibly other parts of the exhaust, as this is obviously the original exhaust and one option is a new rear part of the exhaust system depending on if there is any other damage, but what about the rust on the chassis? am going to give that clean and hopefully its nothing to worry about after treating that area.

I've started cleaning up the area with a wire brush but won't complete until further products arrive, just wanted to see the intial state and looks like a lot of flaking and am going to clean up the chassis rust until all gone and treat with this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361018251578

Just have to hope I've caught the area in time as that is the only rust spot on the chassis.

But after a good clean will see more of what definitely needs replacing and have managed to find the brackets that bolt to the chassis.

I think I got the chassis bracket, the rubber hanger, and an aftermarket clamp on hanger from eEuroparts. FCP has a real nice stainless steel hanger that goes on the pipe but it is real expensive. I think the eEuroparts version, which was much easier to install, was around $5.00 and I figured it would last about as long as the junk yard exhaust parts I was piecing together anyway for my son's car. It got him the rest of the way through college and through his first job with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Cheers Lee, will update with pics once finished as will keep the oval shape as agree with the others above that its a nicer shape, just with all the crap in that area, it was difficult to make out the parts needed yet I may end up taking a trip to a Volvo breakers and see what they have laying about.
