The oil in this case acts like an extra oil ring, it seals the top ring allowing the down stroke to draw in the charge, then allows compression. You REALLY need to do a compression test of your motor. How badly was the engine overheated before the HG change?, was there any scoring in the cylinder bores? The fact that it runs well while running is a good sign. Numbers though, gotta have them numbers!
