2007 S40 2.4i Overheating / immobilizer

Post by Craigd2599 »

Okay boys...
I have a 2007 S40 2.4 non turbo. The motor has about 90,000 on it. I bought the car with a blown engine, found a very nice one from LKQ and had it installed. At install, the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, thermostat, cap rotor wires and plugs were all new as well. The pan was pulled and the oil pump inspected.
The car has never over heated. I've put 20,000 miles on it since I bought it and had the motor changed. Never seen the needle move the tiniest bit beyond dead center. Never burned a drop of fluid.
Thursday night I was trying to jump start my Yukon with the Volvo so she idled for about 20 minutes. No AC running of course. When I was done working on the Yukon, I noticed a large puddle of anti freeze under the Volvo and the expansion tank was dry. Again...temp gauge never fluctuated after reaching operating temp. I shut her off and went inside. Next morning drove her to work on a very hot day...gauge never moved beyond the middle nothing happened, no smoke. I refilled the ex tank and thought nothing more of it.
Yesterday she started overheating. The expansion tank was dry. Put TWO gallons in and it is apparently leaking out from the drivers side of the block. Best I can see the heater hoses enter the block there, and I heard some hissing there as well. Then it started with the hard start / no start like the immobilizer was activated.
This morning I started it fine, temp gauge went to operating rather quickly...within three minutes but it is warm here now. Car ran okay. I drove around the block shut her off and checked the ex tank...dry. I added fluid to the tank, and again she won't start. Fluid ran out from the right side almost immediately. And when I tried starting...it acted like the immobilizer was activated again.
The temp never got near the red at any point. Not really close.
There is no milkshake in the oil and no white smoke.
Any guesses?

Do you mean from the end of the engine block above the transmission housing?
Are there any noticeable press fitted welsh plugs sealing off the engine blocks water jacket in the suspected leak area?

UPDATE:
I replaced the Thermostat. It apparently had NOT been replaced when the engine was installed...which pisses me off because I asked for that.
That said, I got it all back together, including a new breathe box since I had to strip it down that far anyway. The thing started fine, warmed up normally, took a gallon of fluid and proceeded to run like S#@! Stalls, warnings, CEL, but it isn't puffing white smoke and it isn't spiking the temp gauge. Any guesses?

Only other thing I can think of is a faulty ETS.
Engine Temperature Sensor. They can cause all sorts of issues from engine performance to irregular cooling fan function.
