I'm replacing the AW70L in my 1992 940 with a junkyard transmission. When I was replacing the output shaft seal in the used transmisssion, I noticed some play in the output shaft. How much play is ok? If play is bad, is it possible to replace that bearing without taking apart the whole transmission?
Thanks.
How much play in transmission output shaft?

There will be play. WHat determines the need for service is if the play is a lot greater in one directon that another. i.e., up-down vs. right-left This play is checked with the flange installed as it is what rides in the bushing. If you happened to get a 93-95 gearbox then it has ball bearing and the flanged where driveshaft bolts up has a bell shaped cover over the seal when flange is installed.
It is a bushing on an up to 92 trans, the tail housing comes off easily and the bushing is driven out and a new one driven in.

Yep the tail housing comes off easily when it's on a hoist, but when i did mine on the 740 turbo afew years back it was a 3 hour ordeal under the car in hot weather. If you feel the play is excessive, especially side to side I would be doing this BEFORE the gearbox goes back in unless you have access to a hoist.jimmy57 wrote: It is a bushing on an up to 92 trans, the tail housing comes off easily and the bushing is driven out and a new one driven in.
If the play is excessive the output seal won't last as long as it should.

So after almost 3 years, the bushing gutted itself, tore out the seal, leaked fluid out and the car had to be towed home. I *think* the transmission might be ok, but the flange yoke? (splined part bolting to the u-joint) is ruined. The splines are fine but the machined surface that mates up to the tailshaft seal is badly scored.
So my question is how do I find a flange yoke for this transmission (preferably used)? I see new ones listed on the internet for $110 but I'd rather not spend that much. Do all AW70L transmissions use the same one? Are there other cars / years that use the same one?
How about the tailshaft housing itself if I find that it is ruined after taking out the bushing and leftover seal part? Will a housing from any AW70L work? How about other cars / years?
Thanks for any help here. Not even sure how to search for these things on the internet.

Thanks! Any idea what years are compatible? Not sure if the diameter of the output shaft and the number of splines is the same.
What is the correct name for the part I'm looking for? It bolts on to the front of the driveshaft ahead of the front u-joint and has a bolt in the center that holds it onto the splines in the transmission output shaft.
I'll take a picture of it tonight and post it.
Thanks again.
