Hi everyone, I see that this thread is old but I have the same car; and I really love my car. I'm hoping people are still here because I have need of help now. It started vibrating a lot, and the check engine light is on. It threw four codes: p01-04. Now, after lots of work and parts it keeps throwing only p04. My son's been going through everything that can be replaced, etc. He hasn't replaced the ignition coil because he did that a year ago. Could it already be spent? What would make my car go through ignition coils so often? Is it possible that there is an underlying larger problem? We've done: spark plugs, spark plug wires, fuel filter, basically about $500.00 in parts.
My son wants to test the ignition coli but doesn't know how. Can anyone tell me how it's done? I've been without my car for 6 weeks so I would be very appreciative of any help.

I have no idea what a p04 code is but if you think it's a misfire, do a compression test to make sure you don't have a burnt valve.

Fascinating. I have the same problem with my newly acquired 1998 S70 GLT with only 265k. It didn't do this when I was test driving for an hour. Started after I did some updates - plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, etc. My guess is that my total gutting of the suspension had nothing to do with this
. And it was intermittent, although as of yesterday it happened every time I ran the car for a few miles. I carry the OBD with me to reset...
Compression is consistent, between 145 and 150 across the 5 cylinders. Fuel pressure checks out OK.
Today I swapped the ignition coil and MAF from my 97 850 wagon (only 245k) to see if the problem moves to the other car. And then I found this thread.
Sure enough, when I installed the new wires, I strung one of them right alongside the sensor wire you're referring to. I have cleaned up my mess and we'll see what happens.

I am anxious to see if the moving of the wires is the fix. Please update.
The code is made up of a letter followed by four digits. Each one of these parts carries a specific meaning. The letter tells you what overall section of the car the code is coming from. P stands for the powertrain, the engine and transmission. B stands for the body. C stands for the chassis, including the brakes and suspension. U codes are for problems with the computer itself.
The first digit tells you whether the code is general or manufacturer specific. Most of the codes are universal and apply across manufacturers. These codes are standardized by the Society of automotive engineers. Manufacturers might add their own codes for their particular systems. Standardized codes have a 0 or 3 as their first digit, while manufacturer specific codes have a 1 or 2. The second digit further specifies which particular sub-system is affected.
P04 Auxillary Emissions Control
Are there not other digits following the #4?
The final digits signify the specific problem... if there are other digits.
Hope this helps
