Broken Exhaust Manifold Stud

Post by Volvich »

Hi all,
I'm in the midst of a Head Gasket job and I broke one of the exhaust manifold studs. The writeup on tracytruesoaps (Volvo 5-cylinder: How to Replace the Head Gasket) which is for NA engines, says to remove the exhaust manifold. Mine is tubo and after a little research here I found another great writeup that doesn't require removing exhaust manifold. (http://www.atthetipwebs.com/technologyi ... gasket.htm)
You just take off the bolts attaching to the head and leave the manifold attached to turbo.
Now what's my concern. If I leave the broken stud like that, how likely you think it be a problem?
What do you think?

It is a pain but if you remove the turbo you can double nut what is left of the stud and remove it. I had several bad studs and I bought replacements at the auto parts store. There is nothing special about them.

I would rather leave it if it's not likely to cause problems?
I haven't touched the other three bolts so they are tight.

You can try it but pay attention. Exhaust leaks tend to actually eat away at the manifold and the flange on the turbo. A relatively small problem can turn into a much bigger problem after the leak develops.

I see. I just realized that I'm only looking at undoing the rest of the three bolts, right?
There's no need to remove the turbo?
