2008 C30 High Engine Temp & oil light

Ok...help/feedback/advice please I did a long trek somewhat hilly highway. The next day drove all day then out of nowhere temp gauge went to red. Pulled over immediately. Let it cool down drove home--gauge eventually went up again but not in red. No smoke anywhere or weird smell. Next day drove to mechanic..the temp gauge which ALWAYS, even when I start it goes to the middle mark, laid dormat on '0' for 10 minutes and while driving, eventually hit red temp gauge area (later learned shouldn't have drove). Mechanic poured in coolant and it bubbled. Faint, VERY Faint sweet oil smell, which I have smelled on and off a few week prior. Also notice some resistance to momentuem here and there for a week prior to this. Now the back story on this, two weeks ago battery went dead when only 1yr 3mo old. I had oil crankcase replaced about a year ago. Two months later I had a HUGE oil leak, drove to alternate mechanic who said they replaced it wrong, that it could cause severe engine damage. Drove to mechanic who did the work and fixed it again, he showed me a rubber piece that looked like a hair band. Four months ago I notice a very faint oil leak in my parking space. Its on the drivers side but there is also some oil resident below the oil crankcase area. As of not the oil crankcase itself looks clean but could there be leaking from plugs connected to it. Could this be at all connected? I've had the timing belt and water pump changed about 6 months ago...HELP! Thanks for any and all feedback
