What's my engine type and how do I "pull" codes?

I have a '96 850 turbo wagon and I can't seem to figure out what type of engine I have. I've looked on the driver side door info tag as well as the tag on the inside of the left front fender under the hood. I am also curious how to "pull codes" by myself...some type of specialty tool?

Use the tab at the top of the page titled Volvo Repair Database. You will most likely spend an hour there reading the useful info provided.

built in obd so you can pull codes was only offered on 1995 to 1993 850. You have to get a reader around $100 to handle codes on 96 and 97.

you can also look for they type of engine on your vin # .... sixth & seventh numbers .
If the number is 51=b5252s ( i think this is the 10 valve engine) most commonly its the 55=b5254 n.a., 57=b5234t the turbo and the ever powerful 58=b5234t5

Keep in mind there are variances on the engines too..because of air pumps and other additions.. usually there is a identification badge on the black plate facing you (timing belt cover) when you stand on the passenger side wheel and look into the engine.



Also look on top or th engine and see if it say s 20 valve..and on your air cleaner to see if you have TURBO stamped on it.

turbo is the quicker one of the bunch.. only thing faster is the T5 with over 40 horses more.

Yes all the 20 valve engines are reliable and dependable for the long haul... most people will tell you do regular oil changes and also clean out your flame trap.. your good to go!
