1998 V70 AWD long run problems...

Post by Mokomaki »

So this all started when i got this car and noticed theres something funny with the steering... Turned out i needed a new steering rack, and ended up paying over 2k € for the service (new sway bars, tie rods, cv joints... shock upper parts, steering alignment...)

After that i got a sudden CEL, which i ignored due to being an previous VW owner... So then it started flashing and i stopped driving. Few days after checked under the hood to notice i have oil all over my engine cover... So my coils were soaked and 2 from the far right were cracked and different than the 3 first ones. I replaced them and cleaned the oil up. Called it a day and all was fine... Also replaced the oil cap. Few days after i had oil on my engine AGAIN... Did some research and figured it was my PCV system.... so i replaced my oil trap, and most of the hoses going to it. Only hoses i overlooked we're the ones going to the turbo.. But the lower hose at least was completly clogged.. Also cleaned my throttle body and intake manifold. Well during fighting with the manifold i accidently broke the ECT sensor under the thermostat. Tried if she runs. Well she did but of course cold start took a few turns due to not having any choke.. (?). Replaced the sensor the next day and she ran like a champ..... Which brings me to the only problem i have left!.... She still runs rough for a few minutes on cold starts... the car shakes and i can hear that the idle noise is kind of off... Also this got me another CEL this morning, but other than that she runs fine! I AM getting a few surges on WOT 2nd gear sometimes, but then again on the way home today i didnt get any.... The car has been chipped for 230~~ HP. But still electronic boost gauge only shows 0-6-0.7bar? Isnt 0.5 stock?

Thanks in advance.... just wish i could finally convince my wifes folks that my car actually works........

What were the numbers on the CEL? I deleted my SAS years ago and never had a problem starting and it probably isn't that, but they were there for a reason. Give the code numbers and that's somewhere to start.

Figured.. Actually dont have a reader on me now.. I have a VAG obd2 cable that works with my laptop.. but i cant find any software for my volvo..

A friend tried his obd2 bluetooth reader on my V70... it didnt connect on my car, but did on his identical engine XC70 that was right next to my v70..

edit: The symptom of the rough cold idle and vibration actually was there on the first day after the ECT replacement but i had no CEL. CEL only lit up on the 2nd day this morning on start.

We have Auto Zone here to read codes for us free. Do you have a parts store in your world that does that. Just saw where you live.
Internet is great. Just need to see where people live and figure they may have different options than other places.
Codes are the key to the problems. An Obd2 should read codes for you.

It's likely that you tough running has made the code come but reading it will tell you that.

Yes i believe the code came on during starting.... But. It actually turned off today during normal driving!!
Pretty sure my cold start will be rough tomorrow morning, but i noticed that after starting and letting her run for a minute or so (the time it takes to settle) and then turn the car off, Basically the engine is still pretty cold and the thermometer is showing cold also, but still the next start is fine!

Its only after letting it sit for a 7 hour work day that the start is rough again..

And again, i never experienced this problem before my pcv repair operation.... Things that came off:
Fuel rail, intake, intake sensors, vacuum lines (theyre tight), ect sensor... Only doubt is the sensor on my intake pipe that is on the right side of the two. One clip broke and the sensor is actually just so loose that i can wiggle it. Could this be an issue? What is this sensor

You mentioned your coils were soaked.

Is this car a very late 1998 with ETM and direct coil on plug ignition? Or were you talking about ignition leads? If so it can't be read by a VAG cable. In fact I think Ozark here tried that and damaged his immobilser. :(

Keep the VAG cable and software away from it. The VAGs are designed for Motronic 4.4 You have Motronic 7 in your black beauty.

Read with Autel 619 or 702 or 802. Of course if you want the ultimate diagnostic tool you would purchase a Vida -Dice setup.
