2000 V70 High mileage maintenance
2000 V70 High mileage maintenance
Hello, my 2000 V70 has 233K miles on it and I am new to working on my own cars. I am looking for advice on getting it in great running shape. I was wondering what is recommended for service. I am planning to do spark plugs and coils, and replace the brake fluid. Right now I am trying to find a new throttle body. I was also wondering if that is able to be bought used and still be programmed. Thank you for your time.

You can buy a used ETM and get a new software download if necessary. If you get one from the same engine then there is a good chance it won't need a download but unless you can verify the software versions that isn't a 100% certainty. The software download service is pretty much a dealer only proposition and they price it accordingly. It could well be less expensive to get your module upgraded by Xemodex than it would be to buy a used throttle body and then pay for the download. The Xemodex modifications don't need a software download.
A used ETM may have issues anyway unless it has been upgraded with the Sacer position sensors. Unless it has been modified you definitely need to avoid the white sticker versions.
Before you buy tune up parts be sure to read through some of the threads on brand names to avoid so as to avoid having to buy them twice.

I think where to start would be an inspection of engine, transmission, suspension and fluids. I would get a notebook and start taking notes of your car.
Spark plugs are easy. If coil packs are good leave them alone. If you can find a throttle body from the same car it should be a direct install. We have 5 V70 XCs in the family. Here are some notes of their preliminary inspections.

Will surely check out everything. Also, what is the opinion on transmission fluid. I was under the impression it couldnt be changed, but someone told me my fluid was very dirty. Sorry for my lack of knowing. Im still learning.

As far as I know the problem with the white sticker ETMs (and to a slightly lesser extent the yellow sticker versions) was the position sensors which is what Xemodex changes. Xemodex installs the Sacer position sensors which have no contact surfaces. It was the contact surfaces that was the problem on the OEM versions, sort of like a dirty volume control on a radio.
If you are really good at soldering you can install the Sacer sensors yourself. I am very experienced at soldering but I have not yet attempted it. From what I have read the wires are very taught and difficult to position to solder them on but again, I can't say from experience.
Here is what Xemodex installs:

With regard to the transmission fluid it can be changed but it shouldn't be flushed. You need to determine which transmission you have though. If you have the 5 speed automatic then it takes a special fluid and standard Dexron can damage it. If you have a 4 speed then Dexron is just fine. For the 5 speed you need a fluid that has the JWS3309 specification. From Volvo it is very expensive but you can get he same stuff through Toyota at a better price.
