98 V70 Defrost/Floor Heat issue

Post by Stone Farmer »

Hi All, I always use MVS, but this is my first post. I'm not getting any heat to the floor, or heat to the windshield for defrost. I've been all through MVS to find possible problems. At this point, I can't even locate the Defrost/Floor damper motor to determine if it's defective.
Can someone help with the location for the Defrost/Floor damper motor?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I'm pretty sure it is on the left side of the climate unit rather than the right.

Lee,

Thanks for the reply
I did check there, but I'll give it another shot. I'll report back with my findings.

It should be up high on the LH side. It is hard to see/access where it is positioned. It looks similar to the one in your picture, but has a slightly different connection to the flaps. If you remove the LH dash under tray, and lay on your back looking straight up you may see it up to the RH side of the speedo console.

Neil/Lee,

This picture shows what I believe are the Ventilation Damper Motor, and the Driver's Side Temp damper motor, based on the wire colors going to the harness connections.
Am I missing something?

Thanks,
S. Farmer

Hmm! I recently stripped the dash out of a 98 S70 with ECC and only recall pulling 3 motors. Perhaps I missed a second one on the LH side. Our old 850 had 5 motors.

I looked a Vida for a 98 V70 with ECC and is lists 4 motors, but does not show the location of them all.

As I expected, there is the one behind the glove box for cold air ventilation, the one on the RH side (my version of Vida does not show this), and the one on the LH side.

Vida lists the motors as follows: 2 x temperature, 1 x recirculation, 1 x ventilation. Working on the assumption that ECC has temp controls for each side, then that would account for the 2 temperature motors, and the other 2 are self explanatory.

Hope that helps.

The pain with this is that the plastic connections for the flaps connection to the motor drives can split with age, and I have had cases where the flaps stick with age. It would be a major pain to access the motors to remove and test the flaps are all good.

The cold air/ventilation flap behind the glove box can fail as the plastic arm that actuates it brakes. This is a relatively easy repair, requiring the glove box to be pulled, but the motor has 1 or 2 screws at the front, and then slides out.

The motor on the RH side can be removed with great difficulty and patience, but is a real pain as one of the screws requires a double jointed arm (yours!) and a mirror to access it.

The motor(s) on the RH side, in particular the recirculation motor, would probably be accessible by pulling the top dash cover off and removing the speedo binnacle. The LH temp motor I haven't tried to remove, but I'm fairly sure the cruise control may have to be removed to get to it. Maybe someone more familiar with working on that one may ship in.

I have not had a motor fail yet, but have had the flap connection split. There is somewhere on the internet a how-to on cleaning and refurb. on the motors if you want to go that far.

Neil,

Thanks for the information. What you found on Vida does confirm what I'm seeing with 4 damper motors.
So now I'm wondering, so how does the air get directed to the windshield when the ECC is set to defrost?
Also, currently my A/C condenser has a leak, and the A/C is not operating. Could this play a part n not getting warm air to the windshield? I know that some climate control systems require A/C to assist with the removal of humidity in the defrost mode.
Is it possible that my 98 needs to have a functioning A/C system before it will direct air to the windshield?

Thanks,
S. Farmer

The recirc motor is not on the climate unit, it is for the damper below the cabin air filter.

Lee,

My ECC controlled v70 does have the fresh air/recirculate motor, located behind the glove box.
Is that what you mean "below the cabin filter"? It is functioning properly.
Thanks,
S. Farmer

That is indeed the one. The cabin air filter is above that, accessed through the plastic cowl in front of the windshield. That is the 4th motor.
