99 S70 AWD Angle gear seals on trans side leaking

Post by dang5002 »

I just had the transmission rebuilt and now the angle gear is leaking oil from the side that connects to the transmission. Can the seals be replaced without opening the gear housing?

There are 3 seals that go between the trans and the angle gear, were any of them replaced?

The other question is what fluid is it leaking? Gear oil or ATF?

If it's the seal that goes on the angle gear itself I can't imagine any way to pull it out without dissembling the angle gear, it's really far back in the recess. But if it's leaking ATF then both of those seals are easy.

It's definitely coming from the angle gear. Transmission side is dry. I was there when the shop removed the angle gear. He changed all the seals on the transmission when he rebuilt it. I was hoping it was the trans. That would have been his dime, not mine. However, it's odd that it starting leaking after the rebuild.

It really isn't all that surprising. Seals can last a really long time but removing and replacing the shaft that it is sealing will, by design, allow the seal lips to shift. If the seal is old and hard it often won't go back to its happy place like it was before the shaft was removed.

Just get the Corteco (OEM mfg) or Volvo OEM seals, and replace them.
Make sure you review the anatomy of the sleeve w.r.t. Transmission side and the Angle Gear Side.
Note the axle runs through it and its own seal on the Trans side.
It is a bit tricky but can be done without removing the Trans.
All you have to do is remove the Angle Gear.

@dang5002,

I took a random photo from the web to show you the anatomy.
Note that:
- The R axle passes right through the sleeve, i.e., it passes through the hollow part of the sleeve ---> directly to the trans. Here it is sealed by the smaller seal (#2 in photo).

- The sleeve connects the output of the trans to the Input of the Angle Gear. On the trans side, there is a seal (#1 in photo), on the Angle Gear side, there is another seal (#3 in photo).

- Depending on the leak, the color is different.

Trans fluid is red ATF.
Angle fluid is GL5 and is amber in color.

Thanks for your help. cn90, the seal #3 is a seal that is located in the angle gear, is that correct? That is the seal that the transmission shop says is leaking. Is #2 seal in the sleeve .

Yeah seal 3 isn't shown that would be inside the angle gear housing. There are 2 #2 seals, one shown in that picture and then another one on the angle gear where the driveshaft enters.

If your dripping ATF then it really could be 1 or 2, possible that when the sleeve was installed the gasket was folded over on itself.

Items 2 and 14 in this picture.

So, can I remove the seal with a seal puller? Looking at it seems like that is all that is needed. I guess I'll change all of the seals if that's all you have to do to that side. passenger side looks pretty straight forward. Thanks

Seal puller or a large flat head screwdriver.
