Where did you buy your trunk lifts? Can these instructions be used on a 1998 V70 wagaon? If not are there instructions to change them on the V70?

Look seven posts up (not threads) to see where to get them. Do the instructions work for a wagon? I don't know, but if you can replace wiper blades etc. you should be able to do this. Print out the instructions and take them to your car when you go to do it.

I got them on ebay. They are the very good quality German made type. Matt, can I list an ebay seller name here?

The seller name is dickenss I have bought my antenna mast and other parts from him, too. He can also find used parts for you. He offers great prices and has really fast shipping.

I got replacement lifts for my 850 Wagon for $50 (w s/h) from www.vlvworld.com

My neighbor installed them yesterday evening in about 30 minutes. So much for the $290 my local repair shop wanted!

This is definitely doable.

I just bought a '94 850 Turbo (great condition, very happy).
I noticed the same problem with my trunk and figured I would be able to fix it. So I researched and found that the life of those specific struts seems to be about 100k miles (which is what the car had on it).

Bought the parts online, and found your thread, which helped a lot. Thanks so much!

Turned out one of the struts was completely empty and the other wasn't strong enough to hold it open.

Good lighting helps, and if you're sure that the hooked end of the strut is on the post, don't be afraid to use a bit of elbow grease.

Cost $75US shipping included, 30 minutes for a non-mechanic.

Thank you so much for this site!!! I am on my way to pick-up my 1997 850. It needed A LOT of work but when the dealer quoted $350 for the trunk struts I knew I could probably do it myself cheaper. I told him no and then found your site! I will order them and installation looks easy. Unfortunately, I had to get new front struts and brakes and a new engine mount. Also, to replace my dash lightbulbs came to $300. I'll make sure to check this sit in the future before I let the dealer have his way aith me again!

Changing lift gate struts on a wagon is a little more involved but still fairly easy. These insructions are for an 850 but should work on a 98 wagon.

1. Remove the courtesy light in the center of the rear roof trim by prying it out with a small screwdriver.
2. Disconnect the wiring and set aside the light.
3. Remove the roof trim by prying out the the two plastic caps and removing the two screws under them with a #25 torx driver.
4. Remove the rear pillar & roof trim by prying out the trim caps and removing the screws. Gently release these panels by pulling them free of their retaining clips.
5. Support the tailgate with a prop. Change one side at a time.
6. Disconnect the strut to body bracket. The strut ball-joints will pop out using a suitable pry bar.
7. Installation is the reverse.

fcpgroton.com is a good source for reasonably priced Volvo parts.

I have had a heck of a time getting the hooks onto the pin behind the seat. I have tried long needle nosed pliers, everything I can think of to push the hook down onto the pin. I wound up setting the hook on top of the pin and going ahead and attaching the other end. So in essence the end behind the seat is just basically resting on top, held in place by the fact that it can't move away far enought o fall off. Seems to work okay, but I would like to get these seated correctly. Any ideas?
