'98 V70 Outer Tie Rod Won't Come Off

Post by echase76 »

Hi Folks,

In the middle of doing a front end refresh (Bilstein TC kit plus endlinks) and found my outter tie rods are shot while working in there. Ordered a couple up from FCP and expected an hour to do both. Well, Passenger side was all of 10 minutes, but 3 hours later and I can't get the divers side off  . The jamb nut is lose, but no matter what I do I can't get the end off.

Options:

1) torch...I don't have a torch but am willing to get one if that is what it takes.
2) Order up the inner and turn it into a slightly bigger job. Downside is wife will be without her car for a few more days.

Open to any other tips and tricks. What I'm finding is that is it hard to get a good grip and brace on that inner tie rod to really get enough torque.

If you have a pickle fork use it, if not several whacks on the spindle with a 5lb hammer will work.

soak it with penatrene or other penetrating oil, and leave overnight.

Thanks guys. After reevaluating the situation it appears that my inner is shot too Found a rip in the boot and I see rust in there.

Guess I'll go for it all and not worry that the outter won't unscrew off the inner.

Cheers!

I got the jam nut loose by banging as hard as I could on a wrench with a sledgehammer. It was a combination of PB Blaster and rage-whacking.

The nut was so stuck in place that the wrench flats on the tie rod were being rounded off by the wrench I was using on them. I ended up using a vice grip supported by a jack stand to prevent torquing the thing at its end connections and breaking anything besides the jam nut.

I was so happy when I got that thing loose. I thought it would never happen.

Also, I bought that wrench. I learned the hard way - you absolutely need the correct wrench. If you try to use a crescent wrench, pipe wrench, Ford wrench, anything short of an open-end wrench of the correct size (21mm?), it will not work. A flare-nut wrench might be even better if you can find one that big. It'll add a little more resistance to rounding off the nut.

Oh wow I'm getting stressed just hearing about it. Nice work on the removal. Was the inner tie-rod as much of a pain?

That just happened to me on my 2000 S70. One outer was rot-welded to the inner tie rod, and impossible to remove with Kroil, large pipe wrenches & then with fire. I replaced both inner and outer. It took a hacksaw to cut the nut, then a chisel to spread the nut in order to take them apart!

This is why I'm a firm believer in using anti-seize. I put the $hit on everything!
