Ok, cool. So I guess I can "relax" on this?

I changed the filter to a Bosch D3402 when I got the car.

Does it help to use additives for the oil to help the motor run smooth?

Are you sure you posted the right link? It opens to a Bosch D3402 which does not fit a Volvo 850. It's too long. If you installed it, and it sticks down a couple of inches below the engine, a big bump like a railroad crossing can knock it loose and you will never know your oil is pumping out the bottom until you are out.

A service rep at the dealer once told me about someone who did this on a Volvo that was under warranty. Volvo refused to cover the cost of new engine.

This is the OEM filter for an 850:

Oh damm...thank you so much for the info. So I need to replace that asap. Do I need to drain the oil again before I change the filter?

No, nothing much will be lost but the oil in the filter. Just fill the new filter with oil before you screw it on. Afterwards check the oil level after you run the engine.

Good quality engine oil has all the additives needed to lubricate and keep you engine running smooth.

---> OEM is Mann W917 (Bosch 72138 is basically Mann). Good alternatives are Bosch 3321, Mahle OC-204 ($5-$6 at NAPA Auto Parts).

The 1-way valve is good for the first 1-2 sec during startup; after that it is useless.
The fact that the noise persists for a while points to lifter noise.

- Stick to Mann or Mahle.
- Use synthetic 5W30 or 10W30.
- I change oil every 5K and at 180K has no lifter noise.

5w-30 is just too thin for these cars especially for high mileage cars.
XX-40 is much better alternative and engine runs smoother and quieter.

Xx-30 viscosity is more preferable at extreme cold conditions and it's not adviced to use in area where temperatures are higher than 30 degrees Celsius.

Here we go down the rabbit hole of oil choices, but for a 94 T5 I agree with misha, 10w-40 or possibly 5w-40 (Rotella T6!) would be best for OP's California car.

So cn90, you have moved on from the 15w-50 that you championed so heavily for several months???

The OP (Michael) is in LA--pretty temperate weather--and has 150K on his car. 10w40 would be a good year-round weight.

For 150k+ milers: in Michigan and Maine 10w30. Texas, Florida, and southern Cal 10w40.
Now I'm late, I'm late, for a very important date, so I'm outta here! :D

I had 15w-50 semi-synth about a year ago for summer.Problematic viscosity to find here so i returned to 10w-40 all year round.

At the moment I use the Mobile1 10w-40 High Milage. Should be fine. I ordered the Mann W917 filter and will exchange it asap.

Somebody wrote that I have to make sure that the oil level is at the upper max. So I also wil check the level again.
