Just to add one more vote to the alternator diagnosis, this is also exactly how the alternator failed in my '99 v70r. Things stopped working slowly on a Sunday morning and then suddenly there was no throttle control (she did not see this on her car since the '98 has a throttle cable). I had noticed slow cranking for a few days before and thought the battery was getting weak - apparently the warning lights do not work at all for an alternator failure.
