1996 VOLVO 850 ( 10 valve 5 cylinder ) engine

Post by __Lloyd__ »

I bought a 1996 850 and was wondering about the fuel injectors...I understand they are colour coded for the fuel rate they have....something like that. So what colour injectors should this engine have in it...? I ask this as I am thinking that someone might have changed them at some point as the engine is on gutless side....good on the MPG side...but crappy on power. My other 850 a 1994 would blow the door off my 1996 one easy....so wonder if maybe smaller injectors were put in this car by someone. The 1996 has 160,000 Km's on it....my old 94 has 300,000 Km's and has way more get up and go then the 96 850.

With around 20% less power on 10 valve engines it's no wonder. 103KW vs 125KW is a big difference. They have poor top end breathing but really usable torque in the lower ranges. Sorry no data on the injector colours. Some of our Canadian and Australian friends may know the answer.

I agree with precopster....10 valve engines are much slower than 20v,there is a 30hp difference and a whole different engine management.

Now here is a question I really do not know...the engine block is the same for the 10 valve and 20 valve engine....RIGHT...? Now since this is 10 valve...can one put a 20 valve head on this engine....or is there something different about it that would make this not work. just wondering is all...

Yes the same block, crank and conrods as the 20 valve. Pistons have one relief cut in them instead of 2 for the valves and run a slightly dished top. You could cut the extra flycuts and use them in a 20 valve turbo install. You would have slightly more compression than a GLT motor. The 20 valve piston is on the left.

I have a 95 10 valve and a 94 turbo the 10 valve is great for mileage on the highway but it is no powerhouse- the big problem is when I forget which car I am in and try to merge with the 10 valve- now that I did an RN and manual swap on the turbo I shouldn't confuse the two. You could swap the head but don't forget most 10 valve ones use a weird engine management system sorta like the rex/regina on some 740s

There's no 8 valve 850, but the 10 v 850 engine (B5252) is pretty common. The only 8-valve Volvo engine was for the 240, the SOHC B21.
