The injectors have an electrical connector that sends the spark inject signal. You want to unclip the connector.

The problem is that regardless of plugged in or not the catalyst will still be over rich. The oxygen sensor will see the oxygen left over from no combustion as it running lean and ECM will dial up fuel delivery. Left plugged in is the worse but unplugged is not a fix to enable driving for any distance.

Jimmy isn't 15psi worth of extra O2 going to have a very small impact on the O2 sensor's reading when taking into account the entire oxygen reading?

In any case I have to agree with involving Volvo NA and having them view this case. It would be nice to think that after spending all that money, they would come to the party, even with a percentage of the cost.

VCNA is involved....the file was opened yesterday and has been forwarded to the Territory Service Manager for review today. I called them and updated them with what was provided to me on my service receipt..."No compression in cyl. 3. Est. $7000 provided for used engine." NO ROOT CAUSE WAS OFFERED OR ATTEMPTED. JUST A QUICK "WANNA BUY A USED ENGINE AND PAY $5000 FOR LABOR?" Ambulance chasers...or should I say tow truck chasers...

When I have had a failed injector or plugged injector the car would often have fouled plugs on some of the other cylinders and barely run. The low compression may reduce the air pumping of that cylinder but it would still be enough to make it light up check engine light and run poor enough to not make it operable.
The ECM might be programmed on that one to shut down fuel trim correction activity when the injector is detected open circuit. That year model 5 cylinder is Denso system and their fault management is "smarter" than than the Bosch system it replaced.

Gotta love the Japanese for smart engine management systems!!

My Denso 2000 V70 gets 25% better economy than any turbo Bosch Volvo I've owned.

So what you're saying is the system might not overcompensate with extra fuel if it detects an unplugged or out of range injector?

If I try disconnecting, do I risk any damage?

Update: I have set up with a reputable (by the limited accounts I see) local independent shop that has been in the business for almost 30 years to have the issue COMPLETELY diagnosed on Monday. They have already located a used engine (23k miles) from a source they say they have had a relationship with for 20+ years and will be getting it in-house Tuesday - but ONLY if their diagnosis indicates that it is not cost-effective to repair. Total cost quoted (verbally so far), including diagnosis, engine (assuming it's needed), ancillary equipment (filters, fluids, etc.) and installation is $3695+tax. Seems like a decent deal...only downside is that the warranty is only 6 months, 6,000 miles...if it were rebuilt they offer 3 years, 100,000 miles, which is pretty impressive. And the mechanics at this place are salaried...:-)

This is a known issue on these cars. Volvo has issued TJ29871-2015-02-05. It has to do with oil burning in the S60 T5. If in Warranty they just fix, but the problem usually happens out of warranty. Goodwill is on a case by case basis. The TJ calls for replacing the piston rings and switching to full synthetic. If that doesn't work, they are replacing the engines. You can find more instances of this by just Googling. There appears to be something defective with the piston rings on this year/make/model. Could be why you are losing compression. Others are having clogged PCV's from blow by while others are just burning oil. If the PCV/breather gets clogged then it burns oil very quickly.
