Hey phils94850, I cleared the codes yesterday. I checked today before I cranked and there was nothing pending. (This is with the $10 Autel portable scanner.) I will give it a go with my $70 Autel later today and see what I get.phils94850 wrote:Did you clear the codes after installing the new ECT ? I believe thats the one misha is talking about, it should be the one next to the thermostat housing.
Would you suggest pushing it down the street and seeing if I can jump start it?

No.. i wouldnt do that, it should start while cranking. I think you need to check the timing belt and then do a compression test it sounds like its cranking over very easy, actually to easy

It could picked up a lawnmower syndrom because of failed ect.
Too much fuel in cylinders from cranking the engine with a bad ect.

That's what I was thinking, too. I'll crank over the engine a few times and see if I still have timing... Thanks for the suggestions, phils94850.phils94850 wrote:No.. i wouldnt do that, it should start while cranking. Misha, I know it's only fifty bucks. But as it stands, we've spent a little over a dollar per mile on this car... I was hoping to save a little. I understand FAE will fail in a year or two or three. But I can live with that. That being said, perhaps you're right. Will definitely put getting the OEM one on the list possible parts to get.

It is not about how long it will last....it will send wrong values to ecu right out from the box.
Aftermarket sensors just don't work in these cars.
Thats the point.

Thanks phils94850 and misha, I will attempt to lawnmower fix it. And then get a compression test in there. I feel like the key is the sound... How did the cranking change sound like that? I imagine the engine is flooded with fuel. (I tried to crank it at least two dozen times, maybe a little more. I was hopeful... It felt like it wanted to turn over a few times...) I'll post pictures of the plugs and compression readings and anything the computer tells me when I get it.
Harbor Freight has a decent compression kit, right?
Again, many thanks...

Put a compression testing aside for now.
Let's go with ect and lawnmover syndrom fix first.

I would fix your compression issue first ( if you have one ) .. you can replace the ECT but without compression it wont start anyways. The reason I'm saying do a compression test is so you don't waste your money on another ECT. If you have a serious problem then you just wasted money. You do however need to make sure its firing the injectors while cranking. You also need to "smell" you engine oil, if you did wash out the cylinders you probably have contaminated your engine oil so youll need to do an oil change if it smells like gas.
I would put a cap full of engine oil down each cylinder, make sure its getting fuel while cranking, clean your spark plugs while there out, and then try to start. If after doing that, it still sounds the same I would do a compression test. I do agree with Misha, I think you cranking it washed out your cylinders causing the sound you have now. I think you do the lawnmower fix, itll start.
Yes, harbor freight has a cheap compression tester, that's where I got mine from...
Did you ever check the timing belt ?
